How to clean a bronze/gold lamp w/household items?

Is there any household item (vinegar, lemon juice, etc) that will clean a bronze/gold lamp? It looks a bit black instead of gold and I just want it to shine a bit.

My jeweler told me for in between times when I go in to have my gold and diamond jewelry cleaned with her to put one capful of amonia into a cup of water and let the items sit in it for a few minutes. Then take a soft toothbrush and gently scrub them while in the solution with that. Then rinse with clear water (so you don't get a rash when you wear them next) and dry on a soft lint free cloth. You will be amazed! I only have my jewelry done once a year professionally now due to this great fix. I can't tell the difference between when they do it and when I do that! I only go in once a year to have them inspected really now since I learned this.

careful ,if it is proper brass use a brass cleaner, however if it has been electroplated the lacquer may have been rubbed off, would it be cheaper to paint it or buy a new one
