Papa John's apology to Lebron James appropriate?

Do you think it was necessary for Papa John's to go to so many lengths to make its apology to Lebron James for making "Crybaby" t-shirts which they featured for Game 6?

In addition to a stated apology, they are selling 23 cent pizzas to Cleveland fans and donating $10000 to the Cleveland Cavs Youth fund.

I say heck no, this is not appropriate. It may be kind of awkward that a corporation would make shirts like this to begin with, but hey it's freedom of speech. Lebron's not a crybaby either, he's just looking for a fair game. The day Haywood becomes the caliber player Lebron is is the day these things could be blown into this proportion.

The only thing that comes out of this is Papa John's makes more money and not less money for having this news spread nationwide. Just some big national advertising publicity stunt. So no, this is not appropriate.

Update:

I'm just saying the only reason they're apologizing is to make money. And yes, it was in poor taste to make those shirts to begin with as well as unprofessional. Now they will look like one of those durn wishy washy celebrities that did something the media ate up and then say "Oops I made a mistake, we apologize to everyone and hope we didn't hurt anybody."

But bottom line they're reaping benefits off of it all mooching of Lebron's name. It's like they got him to endorse their product for free and in a negative way to boot.

I tell you, they lost my business for a while. Never liked that goof off founder of theirs either. (And I guess it doesn't help I worked for Dominos a stint in college, so I'm already biased a little.)

I think the t-shirts were in poor taste for a corporation to begin with. Not only that, it was very ill advised for a corporation with something like 10 stores within a 12 mile radius of the Cavs. On a business level it was stupid. Lebron James is a big deal in Ohio. So 1) I think Papa John's was inappropriate and 2) they are trying to save face from an Ohio consumer boycott because James is well loved in the area. Heck, he grew up playing high school ball in Akron. He is BIGGER than Papa John's. They are backpeddling because of their own shortsightedness. If they were only located in Washington, that would be more understandable as it would have been a local thing. But to slap at royalty like that near the kings own castle? that was just plain dumb. And I don't think they will make money on this. They are going to get mowed down by tons of customers wanting .23 pizzas on Thursday. I'd hate to work there this Thursday. Hope they don't have any staff shortages. You don't alienate customers, especially in a sour economy. Jeers to Papa John's - stupid is us.

Hmm, good question. I have to say that a public-for-profit company has NO business getting involved in that type of propaganda. However if the local basketball franchise made a t-shirt and papa john's sponsored the "team", I don't have a problem with it. I'm not sure how that whole deal went down but there IS a difference. As for the apologizing, it's all about money, honey. It seems inappropriate, but it's probably a good thing for Papa John's to distance themselves from siding with teams in that fashion. Papa Johns gets a sh**load of business during sporting events (especially during the playoffs) and can't afford to lose contracts due to stupidity.

It got all us talking about it. So I guess it worked for them. Otherwise I never would of thought of Papa Johns today or even this week. But now I might just order a $.23 pizza.

You've just answered your own "question", its about business and money. Lebron has a HUGE fan base, why would they risk alienating or pi$$ing off anybody that buys their product. They were inappropriate for printing the T-shirts in the first place, the actions that followed were completely appropriate.

If Papa John made a lot of money out of this advertising, then I guess it was appropriate for them!!!!

  • John Schnatter should kneel before the King and beg for mercy.

Source(s): I want me some Papa John's now.
