organs for sale for transpant?

I am a transplant recipient and am strongly against this idea. Anyone else agree?

An Australian doctor proposed Monday that the government pay up to $47,000 for kidney donations to overcome a chronic shortage.

The suggestion touched off debate around the country on the idea, which critics say will end in the poor selling their organs to the rich.

Kidney specialist Gavin Carney said allowing the sale of organs would save thousands of lives and billions of dollars in care for patients on transplant waiting lists. He also said it would stop people from buying organs on the black market in developing countries, where they pursue risky, unregulated surgeries.

Australia has one of the lowest rates of organ donation in the developed world, about 10 donors per 1 million people, according to a federal health task force.

"We've tried everything to drum up support for organ donation and the rates have not risen in 10

Update:

It has been tried in other countries and failed miserably. Selling organs exploits the poor and takes advantage of them.

Update 2:

Willingness to donate can be encouraged with education programs - why don't they invest that money in a high school program to teach students who are about to get their drivers licenses the facts about donation.

Once a whole generation is educated and open to it, the future generations will also be more open to the idea.

Organ donation should be encouraged more. One professor in college said that 9 out of 10 people surveyed agreed that it was a good idea and were willing to sign up, but only about 2 out of 10 actually sign up. If organs are going to be bought & sold, there need to be strict rules to avoid a black market (which does exist) because people are dying from unclean organ removal.

I donated part of my liver to my sister in '05. If she didn't get it she would have certainly died. I don't think selling an organ isn't a bad thing. It almost the same as using a woman to carry a baby for someone who cannot. These woman do it mostly for money. So if you really need the cash I think its an option. We really need to get the word out on organ donations, so more people can be organ donors.
