Who is responsible for the quote : "Credo quia absurdum est"?

"I believe because it is ridiculous" the motto of the faith-monger.

The reasoning is simple. It takes no faith to believe what is true or known to the be or proven logically like round earth. The more ridiculous a doctrine is, the less it has of substance, evidentiary basis, or reality in it the better it is as it takes MORE faith to believe it. Hence, religion does good to baffle people's mind with utter nonsensical and absurd doctrines.[Like the Trinity or virgin births]

I googled your quote and found that "Credo quia absurdum est?" is Latin for "I believe because it is absurd." It is generally attributed to the pre-Augustinian Christian theologian Tertullian. In this context, 'absurd' meant 'cannot be proved' and this was apparently Tertullian's rationale for his faith.

As you correctly point out, the hidden assumption is that faith is a good thing and the more absurd a proposition, the more faith is required to believe it. While this may have once been a good way to cultivate faith, it is precisely the wrong way to discover the truth. In modern times, truth has been repeatedly proved to create innumerable tangible benefits for humanity. Willfully perpetuating ignorance for the sake of cultivating faith is now considered by many educated people (including myself) to be an act of treason against the human species and to seriously undermine our civilization.

America cannot produce enough scientists and engineers to sustain our economy because too many parents fill their children's heads with superstitious metaphysical garbage. By the time Johnny is old and wise enough to realize his parents and preachers were wrong about the nature of reality, he's already squandered his only chance in life for a real education and a meaningful career. America is forced to import technical talent from non-Christian countries because too many of our parents deliberately handicap their kids with absurd superstitions before they're allowed to learn the truth.

If humanity is to survive long enough to create a civilization worthy of our intellectual, social, and moral potential -- we must first eliminate the absurd superstitions of our ancient ancestors from our culture. Absolutely nothing is more absurd than believing something because it cannot be proved.

First before answering, I must laugh at Gypsy M's quote: "As for virgin birth, I guess you never heard of parthenogenesis." AHAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHA oh man, that made my day. Well I guess since you are a believer of the virgin birth, I suppose you could also believe that parthenogenesis occurs in mammals as well?

However, I must agree with Gypsy M on certain aspects here. It's not fair to say, "it takes no faith to believe what is true". I believe everyone has faith. You cannot always come up with a justified true belief for every statement... faith must step in at some point. "I know the earth is round because of A, B and C, and I know A, B, and C because of D, E, F, and G, so on and so forth, until you reach a point where you must rely on faith to reach justification for your beliefs. In math terms, I suppose you need to have faith in a set of axioms to be true, in order for the rest of your theorems and lemmas to be true.

And how are you quantifying faith exactly? You say that it requires more faith to believe more ridiculous things, yet something as ‘simple’ as Descartes' statement of "I think therefore I am" requires quite a bit of faith. If you think about it, once you have faith in the Bible, basically anything (including countless contradictions) can be justified. In that sense, I believe it requires LESS faith (one faith - faith in Bible) to be a Christian, compared to your average epistemologist.

It looks like I ended up not answering your question. Oh well.

I don't know, sometimes what Scientests put out are just as bad as religions.

That's why you need to study $cientology, the study of truth.
