Are YOU any good at identifying bandwagon fans?

Just a fun question.

In your opinion, what are some "bandwagon fan" giveaways?

Update:

Craig H-- LOL. I know a girl like that...she wears a Manning jersey one day, a Brady jersey the next, and she has a Chad Johnson one, too. I mean, at least just pick ONE team to torture with your bandwagon fan tendancies!

Update 2:

I love "catching" bandwagon fans. I asked a guy who was supposedly a huge Pats fan to name two other current Pats players besides Tom Brady and Randy Moss...he couldn't do it! LOL. So sometimes just a simple question like that does it.

A bandwagon fan generally has a low self esteem using the winning team they are currently following as a crutch for feeling like they are a part of something successful when nothing else in their life has had that good of an outcome.

The most identifiable factor..their jersey. If it is of a current champion and looks brand new, with a matching hat, shoes, and sweat bands...that screams bandwagon.

Another, more intangible, factor is the bandwagon fans use of team bashing as a form of argument. Instead of actually arguing a point they'll throw in a "Your team here...SUCK!"

*I did want to make a point and say that I agree with Peach Pie in that bandwagon fans don't really bother me. I do think there is a fine line between someone that is a sports fan "rookie" and a bandwagon fan. It is hard to distinguish the two. It's cool that we all have different levels of knowledge! It's just bandwagon fans will act like they know it all!

Well, as for the new jerseys and hats, that is just wrong because that implies that no true fan can ever purchase memorabilia after their initial purchase. However, bandwagon fans are rather easy to spot. They may know the lineup of their team, but a real fan knows what is going on elsewhere in baseball. For instance, a bandwagon sox fan may know the names of every player on the team, but if you ask about the sox a few years prior to their 04 victory, or if you ask them something about the national league, they can not answer.

They only know the stars on the team & know nothing about the team history. Also if they been a fan of a certain baseball team since 2004 or if their team was at one point undefeated in football. I asked a question one time on how many World Series have you seen your team win & this female responded 2, 2005 & 2007 & I knew if she didn't know what year they won, she must have jumped the bandwagon.

There are a number of electronic screening tools on the market, but they are prohibitively expensive.

I am pleased to offer this proprietary detection methodology:

Case 1: Band-wagonner doesn't know any 'classic' players, and seems to lack any knowledge beyond the last two seasons.

Example: "Who is Steve Grogan?" "What's an 'Irving Fryer' used for?"

Case 2: Band-waggoner suffers no emotional downswing after consecutive losses. Work on Monday morning is as cheerful post-win as post-loss. Detachment.

Case 3: Female band-waggoner has selected a pink jersey of your team's most attractive player.

Example: The Patriots score... "Oh, Tom Brady is so hot! Yay Tom!"

Case 4: All their clothing appears suspiciously new. Game jerseys, like scars tell stories. It could be the hot carnuba wax nacho cheese you dumped in your lap when Clinton Portis scored his 5th touchdown, or stains from halftime football in the street...

Bandwagon fans are insidious, and sometimes hard to spot.

This is a great question, of tremendous value.

    good question.

Bandwagon fans are the lowest for of fans. They are the ones wearing the brand new jersey or hat with the team that just won the Super Bowl or any championship. They cannot name any 2nd tier players such as offensive lineman or special teams players. They also have "a second favorite team".

YOU CANNOT HAVE 2 OR MORE FAVORITE TEAMS!!!IT IS A CONFLICT OF INTEREST!!WHO DO YOU ROOT FOR WHEN THEY PLAY?

My cousin is a bandwagon fan,she is a Penguins fan but has 3 other "favorite teams".

Like everyone else has said, they have the new jersey from a recent winning team, the hat, bumper sticker. They claim to like a certain team but cannot answer any relevant questions about said team. The only thing they know is that the team is winning and the names of a few popular players.

To be honest with you, they don't bother me that much. Anyone who likes football, for whatever reason, is cool with me. Yeah it is annoying when they claim to be "die hard fans" but hey, they're not really hurting anyone so I just laugh and nod, and then go back to drinking my beer.

Third week of the season they are wearing a shiny new Patriots/Colts/Cowboys hat

Mid point of the season they are in a sports bar with a sparkling new jersey, half-interested in the MNF game, consuming bee-ahs and laughing at the commercials and oblivious to the score/situation/down/penalties

Wear their Bengals gear in public all during the pre-season, but by week #2 their shoulders are hunched, their eyes glazed over and they'd rather talk about MLB, NBA or Nascar

One day they are rooting for one team and the next they may be rooting for the opponent. No team loyalty period! They probably know nothing about the team except who the cutest player is at the moment. Tomorrow it will be someone else on another team. They may wear a shirt of one team and the next day have their opponent's on. I am not a fan of bandwagon fans at all!

A bandwagon givaway would definetely be when they think someone will win in the biginning then during the middle of the game they say ya know what i sorta like that team better i want them to win. and the new team they'lle pick will already be winning.

Most of them disappeared when OSU got blasted by LSU or when the Pats* got beat in the superbowl. You can tell the true OSU fans because they are still here whining and making excuses. Same for the Pats* fans with the additional trait of being in denial about cheating.
