Vocab help (not sure which one fits)?

In the sentence:

The hikers sat ____ by the mountain lake after their long climb.

The word Languid is supposed to be used to fill in the blank in one of it's four forms: Languid, Languidly(adverb), Languish(verb), Languor(noun.)

As of now I am using languor because after the verb, "sat", shouldn't there be a noun? Would an adverb work as well?

I realize that after the blank there are two prep phrases so the sentence can really be simplified to

The hikers sat ____. (languid, languor, languidly)

Obviously it's not languish.

Help is much appreciated !!!

Adverbs modify nouns. So in the case of your sentence, the verb is "sat" and is intransitive, meaning it does not require an object. Thus, the only suitable word to follow the noun would be an adverb (languidly).
