What is your opinion of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden BOOKS?

I am interested in the books not the short lived TV Series from Sci-Fi... they didn't give it a good enough chance.

The series started me reading the books-- I'm on #5 now. I can see why they made some changes in the show: the books tend to be convoluted. They're fun and I enjoy them; Harry is an excellent character and the series did well by him. It's the whole world that Butcher has created: there's the White Council, White Court (one set of vampires), Red Court (another set), Jade Court, more than one faerie court. . . well, you get the idea. Then there are all the characters from those courts. It's hard to keep track without a scorecard.

The female characters are reasonably strong, though Harry keeps saying how much he needs to protect females and the women do need protecting.

Butcher does tell a good story, breezy and down to earth-- or as down to earth as you can be in that sort of fantasy-- and I have recommended the books. I don't know if I would have gotten into them without the TV series though, honestly; and the reason is what I said before, lots of characters and -- hmmm. Well, there's not a lot of depth to the women characters. . . I don't know how to explain it. Harry tells us about them, they generally slug him and say he a moron, and then we move on to whatever threat is looming.

    Does that help?

I love this series of books. The tv show didn't do it justice, and they made too many changes in my opinion. That hockey stick looked ridiculous.

Harry has a good heart, and is always concerned with protecting others. I've just finished the latest book, Small Favor, which was a very good read.
