How relevant are today's religions to the world we live in?

A great thinker, and comedian, once said

"the reason our institutions, our traditional religions are all crumbling is because they're no longer relevant."

How true do you think that statement is?

Religion is a human activity. Of that I have no doubt.

But it doesn't mean, as such, that it is false or wrong. Music and technology are also human activities.

But all activities will change with the times, the culture and the people involved in them. Without spirituality, I honestly don't think a person is complete. We may be animals biologically, but we are not simply animals. There is an additional dimension to man which the material world is unable to fulfill. That is why there is spirituality.

But it is a mistake to assume a spirituality that made sense to man 5 000 years ago can carry us through eternally. Our view of the world has changed and we can not go back. Just like we can not go back to infancy to a time where we did not know language.

To paraphrase the Tao Te King:

The flexible reed bends and does not break, but the strong and rigid branch breaks.

I don't see the difference between today's "modern" world and the ancient world - 10 centuries after Creation, then 10 centuries after that, then 10 centuries after that. Each so-called 'society' was more "modern" than the previous. Evolution does exist in matters of timelines. Therefore, each "modern" world was better than the previous. As far as religion goes, it doesn't matter. Every religion we know of (other than God's own) is man-made. Each of them were created for their own society and for their own cultures and whatever the "modern" people believed in at the time. Enough people 'spread that religion' around and coerced others to join in - it then became the norm. Conformity was the ultimate glue that held religion together, especially in the more primitive days. If you're interested at all, God's religion is in James 1:27. It is the only one I've ever known that makes sense. I practise it myself.

I would say that religion is not relevant to the world we live in, except that it is still causing so many problems in the world. I do think that religion is now on a strong downward spiral in terms of relevance, but for they moment they are still having an impact.

I think the very fact that there is a struggle to maintain their figures points to the truth. That they are losing relevance in modern times. I mean the changes in society just don't fit into this. And the religious right wouldn't have this new level of oppression if there wasn't a growing trend. that and Jesus himself said that religions would lead to the higher plane of understanding without religion in the next era. Which is in 4 years 2012, so even he knew his time was limited.

Only those religions which show a solution to the problems of humanity are relevant.

All true religions are relevant to this age as they come from True God who is creator of all worlds (ages).

Last and modern religion Islam is a complete way of life that governs all facets of life: moral, spiritual, social, political, economical, intellectual, etc.

I don't think it's true. some people need religion to become helpful of others. just look at the religious charity institutions.

I think that religion, practiced purely and honesty, is very relevant to our world and might help a great deal, but I don't think we'll ever see that.

Yes, he is right. Religions are lifestyles, which ought to change with the circumstances, resources, experience and knowledge.
