When is MLB going to do something about bad umpiring?
During the Angels - Royals game last night, Denny Matthews (Royals Radio Network) commented - correctly - that "Tim McClelland brings the zest and enthusiasm of a pine cone when he is calling balls and strikes." Having officiated numerous sports over the past 30 years, I realize how hard the job is. However, a man in this position must act like he wants to be there. Beyond that, he and C.B. Bucknor (as well as Derryl Cousins) MUST be the worst umpires in MLB. When is the Commissioner's Office going to "man up" and take action against poor umpires? I don't mean to say these men had a bad game that cost "my" team a win; what I mean is that these men have had bad CAREERS yet still are allowed to keep their jobs. Should we as fans be willing to accept mediocrity and apathy on the part of the officials of this sport?

has anyone ever played high level baseball here? im talking about with a crowd well over a thousand people? if you have you appreciate umpires that do not have over the top balls and strike calls, as a player you want an umpire to be delibrate with his calls, honestly its bad enough that a couple thousand people just saw you strike out but then you have the umpire giving it to you with his crazy stikeout dance, its not needed and as a player you feel that the umpre is showing you up, which does happen very often. as long as these umpires are consistant then they will always have a job, and honestly judging a borderline ball or strike call that is moving 90+ with a good couple of inches of break is not easy especially when the catcher is framing the ball well, and for the guy with the plan about the cameras, i know you have never played because the game is centered around error and failure, if you take the human umpire out then every single call is going to be exactly the same, and heaven forbid your team gets sent home in the playoffs because of a mechanical error, live with the human error, thats what makes the game what it is

I've a modest proposal. Let's get rid of human umpire ALTOGETHER. Wouldn't even need the replay thing. Each ball park is required to put umpiring posts with camera and computer at home, 1st, and 3rd, in the air over second with additional ones down the lines at 1st and third, 3 at the fences in the outfield, and one just to focus on whether the ball goes out or not. Then we could work on finding a program for computer announcers, too.

The worst umpire in the game is Angel Hernandez. Every game he does, he screws up at least one call, and he seems to think the game is about him and not about the players. Bucknor and Cousins are bad, too, but Hernandez is the worst.

Wow so bad umpiring includes lack of zest and enthusiasm. I thought it had to do with making poor judgements and bad calls.
Does this mean that we expect umpires to make every call perfect and be entertaining?

I actually think its better when umpires aren't over zealous, me being an umpire myself, the game is about the players not how loud or obnoxious an umpire is.
