No Bread? Why can't I put bread in my compost?

My local council says I shouldn't do this. Any idea why? Their phone's engaged!

Update:

OK I'm intrigued - what kind of "acts" would it attract?

Someone once told me you can't compost birthday cake, either. But it rotted away just fine, thank you. I think it depends entirely on the size of your compost heap. As long as there is room to bury it within the heap, or if you can add a couple of handfulls of brown material, that should deter any rodents. No one will be the wiser, either.

The only reason that people might say don't put bread in compost is that it MAY attract harmful bacteria like rice. But i put bread in mine and it decomposed in 3 days, so i don't think there is a problem composting bread...

    hope this helps

Bread is not added to compost because it doesn't breakdown the same way leaves and other "normal" composting items do. It can attract pests, rodents for etc and may introduce harmful moulds to your compost, creating a health risk.

I always compost my old bread. It breaks down just fine, as long as it doesn't have butter or margarine on it.

Just put the bread in the bin

    1. Hold the bread and walk to the bin

    2. Open lid and release the bread so it lands safely in the bin

    3. Close the bin and walk away as if you did nothing

    4. Feel no guilt what-so-ever

You have just gotten rid of unwanted bread

    DON"T BE AFFRAID OF BREAD

    BREAD IS AFFRIAD OF YOU!

If you mix a bit in a large pile its fine, but large amounts cause small creatures to proliferate that harm earthworms.as well as larger unwanted animals. I soak buckets before deep burial with coarse browns To be extra safe Ill set a heavy bucket or rocks on top of the area where its buried. ecogreengene.com

No idea. I put bread in mine and it decomposes just fine.

Maybe they're concerned about what's on the bread, such as butter, fats, etc............
