What is this everyone is talking about??
I keep reading questions where people are talking about a fetal pole. I am not sure I have ever heard of this. I have had three children and am pregnant with my fourth. What is a fetal pole?? Can anyone tell me?

It's the very beginning sign of an embryo - at it's earliest development. When the fetal pole is detected, the heartbeat usually is as well. These are good signs, obviously - Without either, there is a risk of miscarriage (If the woman is past 8 weeks along or so).
It is usually only visible on the ultrasound machine when a woman is at least 6-7 weeks along.
"The fetal pole is a thickening on the margin of the yolk sac of a fetus during pregnancy. It is usually identified at 6.5 weeks with abdominal ultrasound imaging, and 6 weeks with vaginal ultrasound imaging. However it is quite normal for the fetal pole to not be visible until about 8 weeks. The fetal pole may be seen at 2-4 mm crown-rump length (CRL), and heart motion is often detected when it is seen. In the embryo, the heartbeat is seen as a regular flutter, which should be first evident at 5 mm CRL. If the embryo is less than 5 mm CRL, it is possible for it to be healthy without showing a heartbeat, though a follow up study in 5-7 days will almost always demonstrate the heartbeat."

The Fetal Pole is seen during pregnancy as a thickening on the margin of the yolk sac. The fetal pole is not really a fetus but is the embryo during a very early stage of pregnancy. It looks very much like a small thickening on the side of the yolk sac contrary to most expectant mother’s expectations. It gets its name from the fact that its puny size ensures no details can be seen on the ultrasound other than a tiny pole.
Normally it is seen in two and a half months with the help of ultra sound imaging and by using vaginal ultrasound imaging it can be identified within six weeks. Usually a fetal pole is observed at 2-4 mm CRL that is Crown Rump Length, and when it is seen, heart motion is most likely detected. If the embryo in case is less than 5mm CRL then although it is likely that the baby is healthy a follow up examination must necessarily show the heartbeat
