Mother's day?

I have noticed on this site today a lot of questions about men getting presents for their wives on mother's day. I find this quite surprising as in the UK mother's day is supposed to be when children give their mothers presents, treats etc.

If, as seems to be the case, it is in America a time for men to get their wives presents, then why call it mother's day at all? Why not just call it wives day and have done with it?

Because our society is disgustingly materialistic.

I read an article in our local paper here last week about divorced mothers, and how they find it necessary to send reminders via the children to their ex-husbands to ante up and buy something nice for them for mother's day because 'otherwise they'd just get the handmade card their kids did at school'.

There was a poster on here earlier today complaining that her husband didn't think he needed to buy her anything because she's not his mother, and the women basically seemed to agree he was a disrespectful jerk who clearly didn't respect her or something like that.

Honestly, the things I sometimes see women say here ... if I weren't allready married ... it would really put me off.

You can be a wife and not be a mother. Most husbands get their wives things because their kids can't buy anything. It's a way of showing their appreciation for all the work the mother does for the kids, you know when they are sitting on their butt watching the game. When the kids, hubby and mom are sick but mom is the only one woman enough to get up. For me it's all about my kids, but my husband goes all out because he deploys frequently and being a mother was a 24/7 job this year and last.

Mother's day = a day to celebrate all mothers.

I call my friend (who is a mother) on mother's day and say hello. It's not just about husbands getting gifts for wives.

Some kids are too small to get gifts for their mothers. Although, it is a very commercialized holiday in the U.S. I'd rather have a homeade card than some flowers that would die in a couple of days. It's all about the almighty dollar!

    Interesting!

I've seen countries celebrate mother's day in March. Personally, my parents come early to mind in almost all holidays. But since the year 2003 my number 1 event in May is the Red Cross day (May 8th).

Source(s): I served with the Red Cross during the Iraq war.

In America, men with small children are expected to show appreciation for the fact that the wife is mother to his children as well as doing something for his own mother. As children get older then it's a family effort to appreciate Mom. Men whose wives haven't given them children get skipped on this day so it is not a day for wives.

Men get both their mom and wives something from the kids..b/c the kids can't go buy a present for mothers day!

Same goes for Fathers day too!!

Ha,ha. My husband completely agrees with you. He always gripes and gripes and says things like: "you aren't MY mother." but always does something sweet for me.

I think of it as a day for appreciation from my family. Same for fathers day.

Well, my kids are 5 & going to be 3 next week.... so I can honestly say... if I get anything... yes he got it. But it would be "from the kids", as he takes them to pick something out.

Now, when we had no kids... it was just another day.
