Which is harder? Statistics or Precalculus?

Im a freshman in college and took precalculus last quarter but didn't do well in it at all. In high school as a senior I took statistics and did okay but that was high school level. I need to take another math class next quarter and I just need a little help deciding. I would be familiar with Precalculus already but I'm still not sure how well I'd do. Same with stats.

Statistics maybe a little easier, but it is much boring and the calculation and formulas are very long.

For Precalculus, once you get the concept, it will be very easy.

While I believe the actual math behind pre-calculus is harder than Statistics, precalc is actually an easier class.

This is because statistics is mostly about logic, and it can be very difficult to understand the logical process behind settting up a probability. Most people don't naturally think that way and it can take some getting use to.

As for precalculus and even regular calulus its just the next evolution in your algebra skills. You alread know how to solve for x, now you are taught a bit more on what you can do with it.

Calculus is all about what we know based on change. Its fundamental theorem teaches us that if we look at how somehting changes over time then we can determine a growth or rate of change. This is called the derivative.

An example is that we have a car going 60 mph for 2 hours. How far has it gone? Well we know its rate is 60 miles in 1 hour. so we expect it to remain at that speed. This is the idea behind the derivative.

Calculus is interesting for real world velocity and aceleration while statistics is more if you like card games, and lotteries.

While I almost got an A in Calculus the first time I took it I barely got a C in stastics until I had more practice if that tells you something about it....

Statistical math gets insane if you take the enigineering route. I have taken several higher levels and seen how strange it can seem...

Discrete Mathematics uses the methods like induction and proving to state why the statistics are true. It involves complex computer science data structures and algorithms. You actually can't take that class at a univeristy until you have taken University Calculus 2 (Integral Calculus), and that course was a pain in the ***.

Numerical Analysis is another discrete mathematics class which involves studying approximations based on algorithms.

That course can use differential equations with even partial derivatives ( Very Yucky!)

In case you are wondering what stat classes are like go to this page and check out some of the course overviews...

Basically if you are business oriented you should do statistics, but if you are science then calc is more helpful sinc it is a strong foundation for most higher level math such as linear algebra and differential equations..

  • It depends on the level of statistics. Most students would probably find statistics easier because an introductory stats course includes more applications and a few ideas and formulas to remember while precalc is preparation for calculus and you must master throughly important algebra and geometry concepts to be prepared for calculus. But

know what type of statistics class you are signing up for, a stat class that requires calculus could be extraordinarily challenging, look at the formula for the normal probability distribution for example. MOST STAT COURSES won't require that however, you will usually use a table or calculator to get areas under normal distributions.

Take calculus. I personally think that it was a lot easier than precalculus.

However, statistics might have more relevant applications for you depending on your major.

It really depends on the professor. I had a great statistics teacher and loved it but found precalculus easier.

Are you kidding me? Statistics is wayyyyyy harder than PreCalculus. All PreCalculus is is advanced college algebra. It barely touched calculus 1. It's a very easy class once you get the hang of it. The problems in PreCalc are very straight forward. However, in statistics not so much. Your problems and answers in statistics could be or mean anything. Statistics is very difficult math to understand but is also very useful. You'll see more statistics in the real world compared to PreCalculus. You probably may never see PreCalculus in the real world actually.

I'm taking precalculus, its very easy, I think statistics is harder cause there's more to memorize, there both the same level of basic math though

it truly depends on your major, if you plan on during something related to business, you'd be better off doing statistics, and if you are a serious in majoring in science, you'd be better to take calculus, do not pick your classes based on what is easier... may seem better in the short run... but you will regret it later on... talk to your academic advisor...

Stats is usually tougher. Stats is somewhat equavalent to calc. Therefore, it is tougher than precalc.

It totally depends on the course. Neither is intrinsically harder than the other.
