Why is Obama considered black?

He calls himself black.

Because of the "One Drop" rule that was established in the Slavery days and in the days after when the census considered each slave as 1/2 person. Rather archaic but True!

First of all you are completely wrong. His father was an african (very black), and his mother and American from the midwest. Racist whites for decades labeled anybody with black blood in their body black. So there is your answer.

what gets me is how the USA people think it may be an issue. what an ignorant nation. Surely the sex, colour or creed of a candidate is irrelevant? Equality has got absolutely nowhere if a society feels these issues have a relevance in the 21st century.

thats actually backwards his father is black and his mother is white... the reason is because people are ignorant , they just dont understand... i really love this question because i am also Mulatto, my dad is black and my mom is white and it's not people's fault that they dont understand this because they were never taught my favorite example is for some reason kids in my school decided to play a white vs black basketball game and when i was picked for the black team i didn't play because im not black im Mulatto... so all in all it's just because of people's ignorance.

Think about it. When you look like a black man, and get treated like a black man, you are a black man. I know it's hard to believe, but black people, and especially black men endure racism and intolerance to this day. No one is going to stop and say, 'wait...I wonder if he has a white parent'. He APPEARS black and that's what racism and stereotypes are based on...appearances. It's funny that white people even think that they can understand these experiences, especially conservative white people who don't even try to understand it, but pretend everything is equal. Old school was one drop of black blood was enough to consider you black. You had such lovely terms as mulatto, octoroon, etc. For the record, he is bi-racial but chooses not to pass. (Old term for trying to pretend to be white. Not easy with his hair and features.)

YOu are NOT racist...you are right in suggesting he is half white...he just looks black because the black genes are genetically dominant.
