what is wrong with my air conditioner?

About a week ago i noticed that my air was not coming out as fast as it normally would so today i changed the filter and noticed part of my coil was frosty, but after leving the door of my air conditionoroff for ten minutes it meltd So i turned the fan on after changing the filter and ran to the store whe i came back it was hot as hell nd it was onlyblowing hot ar, i messe with it turning on the air and fann off and it cooled off for a minute then heated back to hot air. So i tried to turn it off and it wouldnt turn off. So finally it was gettin so hot i here i jus flipped the the circuit braker to off and thats where i left it.

Please help!!!!

    one of two things-

    1. it might have a slight refrigerant leak in the system causing it to freeze up. If this is the case, you'll need to have a qualified HVAC technician repair the leak and add refrigerant to it.

    2. the coil could just be really dirty. If you can, clean the coils where the filter is with a mild, grease cutting detergent, rinse it off well, allow it to dry and then turn it on. If this cools you down, then you've succeded. If it doesn't see step 1.

    Unplug the air con. takre out the filter and then get a vacum or brush and clean the front of it, coils and use a damp cloth and really clrean off the dust and dirt wait 20 min, repace the clean filter and plug in and u are good to cool. the coiles etc most likely are dirty, even with a filter, I clean mine every 2 months here in the desert with the wind and sand/ dust.. good luck. ps. when dirty the uit will freeze up with frost..
