Should we be taking our son to a regular family doctor or a urologist?
He is six years old and he wets the bed. The thing is...He is completely ok for months. He'll go every night without wetting the bed at all. Then all of sudden, He starts wetting the bed again. then it happens at least 5 nights a week for a couple months. He keeps cycling through the two. Then we also aren't sure if he is developing "down there" properly. Other than that he is a bright and extremely healthy 6 /yo. Should he see a family doctor or a urologist?
We of course make sure he isn't drinking too many fluids after dinner, we never punish him for it, and yes we use lots of positiveness :) I just wanted to make sure I wasnt' going to go to the doctor and they just automatically sent me to a urologist. We don't have health insurance so I want to skip any steps to getting to the urologist if that is what is inevitabley going to happen. Although it seems from everyone so far, the family doc should be able to help us out.
I know that wetting the bed is a more normal thing. however, I know they have a nose spray. My thing with the bed wetting, is the cycles he is going through. The nothing for months, and then months of wetting every night.

There's very little to no physical signs of development in a boy that young. Not until puberty kicks in will you really see any change. Could you explain what you mean a bit clearer?
I take it you do the usual non-bed wetting things like make sure he doesn't have a drink just before hitting the hay; no scary stories or TV; praise not fear when he gets it right, encouragement for next time when he gets it 'wrong' so he doesn't feel embarrassed.
Eliminate external influences - especially stress-causing ones such as bullying. If all those are done and it still occurs, then the doctor is the next step, as s/he is usually the one to refer you on to a urologist. Unless it's someone you've been to before. Then it's just a matter of ringing up and making an appointment.

Take him to the family doctor first if he needs to see the uroligist the dr will refer him. It isn't completely uncommon for a 6 yr old to wet the bed, but if you are concerned better to be safe and make sure there are no issues causing it.

You should see your family doctor. Let him decide who to see.
