Infant car seats?

Is there anyone that didn't have an infant car seat? Did you go straight to the convertible ones? I am leaning towards getting a convertible one 5-40 pounds instead of getting an infant car seat, then having to buy a different one.

I know a lot of people leave the baby in the car seat at other people's houses. If you don't have an infant car seat, what did you use?

Or do you think the infant car seat is well worth the money to buy it?

I just got a convertible one. Its super comfy and baby loves it. The infant seats are a pain in the butt to lug, only last for a short time, and are not comfortable for most babies. I just held my baby when out, or put her in my sling. Getting in and out of the car while she was sleeping was not even an issue. she would go from seat to sling and back again with just a flutter of the eyes, and then straight back to sleep.

I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both. I have a 6 month old who is getting ready to get a bigger carseat because he has almost outgrown his infant one. I have to admit that the infant carseat was very handy, though. For example, when we go out to eat at a restaurant, we just take the carseat in with us & put it in the sling they provide. Otherwise, we would have had to hold him. When shopping, we can put the carseat in the shopping cart instead of having to bring his stroller along or carrying him around. We bought an expensive infant seat, which I regret since he outgrew it so fast. Later, I learned that the fire department gives free infant seats if you just go & watch a 15 minute video on how to install them properly. Some hospitals even give them to you when you give birth. Maybe you could try something like that and then invest in a good convertible carseat when your baby gets older. Just a suggestion!

I have both, but I am not using the convertible one yet. My daughter is 5 months old and I am still using the infant seat. I think you'd be fine with just the convertible one. The only reason that I am using the infant seat is that when I go to the store etc. I just grab the seat and put it on the cart. If you use the convertible seat you have to take the baby out and carry her. So I found the infant seat much more convenient.

I had the infant car seat / carrier, as it came with the stroller system. If you don't have one, when you are out you can use a little travel swing or a regular infant carrier (like the carseat carrier, but not for use as a carseat). My daughter has always been small for her age, so I used the infant carseat with her until she was over 1 yr. old. It was helpful too, being able to take it in to the stores when we went shopping, if you didn't have one you would have to find an alternate way to handle that. I think you just need to outweigh the pros and cons you can come up with and see what will work for you.

They say the infant seat is a better an more comfortable fit for the little ones. And people do like to tote them about in them, so as not to disturb the baby. Personally I find them rather cumbersome to carry about places, but the idea of not disturbing baby is nice. You can get an infant seat/bouncer very affordably if you just want a comfy seat for baby to leave at Grandma's too. I was going to go with the convertible soley for the efficiency of cost as well, but someone gave me an infant car seat/stroller combo that her baby outgrew rapidly. I think you can make it work with the just the convertible, but keep in mind, especially for a tiny baby, you may need to buy the inserts to make them a more comfortable fit for the little one.

I went straight for the convertible...I had twins and I knew I wouldn't be able to lug 2 infant seats around with me...and I didn't want to buy a total of 4 car seats in the first year!!!

I used a stroller if we were going to be walking places or the front pack carriers (2 of them) if I was just running in somewhere...I carried their bouncy chairs with me, if we were going to visit someone....

I liked the infant seat for the convenience of taking them into stores (always IN the basket, NOT on top of it), restaurants, etc. Also, when DD fell asleep I could take her inside without waking her up.

If you are going to go straight to a convertible get one that fits infants well. Most are rated from 5lbs, but don't always fit newborns well. I have heard that the Cosco Scenera, Evenflo Triumph Advance, Sunshine Kids Radian, and Britax Decathalon and Diplomat fit newborns well.

a couple of things you might want to consider,

    Pros

    1. put in a shopping cart

    2. being able to not wake the baby every time you have to get out of the car,

    3. clicks into stroller,

    4. don't have to carry baby all the time,

    5. some place the baby is safe and comfortable when out eating or shopping, at a friends house

    6. going out to eat is much easier

    CONS

    1. having to buy another car seat

    2. price

    3. out grow them fast

    4. heavy to carry

i would go with the infant seat till your baby can sit in a high chair or can crawl, my baby just turn a year old and he was in his infant seat till about 7 months old. then he was just to big for the seat and way to heavy..

It lasts longer gettin the convertible but..its more easy to get the infabnt seat when shopping and stuff..so you need to think about it

I would get the infant seat, you baby mightbe too small for the convertible one. and tere is more functionality to the infant seat in stores and strollers and bases.

I am against spending unnecessary money toobut I think this is a must have.
