If the NHL stopped fighting, would you stop watching?

Yes, I posted this already in the Hockey category, but I'm hoping to get a different group of answerers from the general Sports community.

So -- in no other sport is it OK to just run up and start punching somebody. Basketball, football, you just don't see this (and, OK, I'm sure there are exceptions but they're rare). The only other sports with fighting are, well, fighting sports: wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, etc.

If they stopped allowing fighting during hockey games (Checking would still be OK, just not punching and such) would you still go?

What about if they cut out checking?

I'm not talking about increasing penalty-box times; I'm talking about just tossing somebody out of the game (the way I'm assuming would happen in, say, baseball, if you just punched somebody else).

Opinions and ideas welcome, but mostly I want to know; Would you stop watching?

No I would not stop watching. Well I want checking but not a whole lot of fighting. Because fighting is not really part of the game. The whole point of hockey is not fighting and getting hurt. It is merely playing and having fun. That is not the point of hockey.

I'm a full contact kickboxer and i absolutely love fighting but i also enjoy a good hockey game! I wouldn't stop watching the NHL if they stopped the fighting because they are such amazing athletes to begin with and i'm amazed to see the things they can do on the ice! The goalies are especially fun to watch with their cat like reflexes and how they use them to stop some unbelievable shots. The fights do make hockey more exciting but i would still love the game without the fights! Hockey would never cut out checking because then everybody would be scoring goals. Recently, it seems as though less hockey fights have been occurring due to referee involvement but i don't think they will ever cut it out because they realize hockey players have a tight bond. Although they hate each other when their teams clash they love each other and respect each other off the ice!

No, I would not stop watching, and it's not like the hockey of the last 70s and 80s anymore when there was a lot more fighting. Since the lockout, the tempo of the game has changed to a more finesse play then who is the bigger and better goon. There are a lot more games where there are no fights, then games with fights now a days--not to say they don't happen, just not as much as they used to. Fights are a part of the game and always have been, and you can't just toss out a guy for a penalty (which is all fighting is).

I think I would stop watching hockey if fighting was removed. Hockey league officials are butting in way to much anymore. Some of them have never even put on a uniform and have no place taking out what makes the game so exciting, Those who have donned uniforms should take it away simply because they know what kind of adrenaline rush it gives to a team. Fighting and hockey go hand in hand, if there is no fighting, there is no hockey!

I would still watch. Its a great game. I've seen games with no fighting and they were great. It takes one hell of an athlete to play hockey.

Source(s): I tip my "hat trick" to the NHL.
  • Yes, I would still watch. Fighting is a part of the game; it influences momentum and can get a team fired up.

The game is about skill and teamwork, and thats why I watch.

I already stopped watch the NHL due to the illegal work stoppage a few years ago, which I do not support.
