I will be 39 later this year, I'm an 8th year student of dance. I am in my 8th year of jazz, 6th year of ballet, I did 6 years of hip hop and 3 in lyrical. I may have gotten a late start, but there is no age limit to try something new that you love. I used to study marine biology and have taken some
FIRST SOLO-Want critical feedback?
I know you don't improve unless you get feedback. In order to get feedback, you need to be able to watch me. Well, I am attaching video. This is a contemporary solo and that is a style I don't actively take. The choreography was difficult, but in this dress rehearsal performance, there were no errors with the choreography, I just wished I smiled a little more (I did in the recital). Please, tell me what you think, what I can work on, what about the musicality, can you tell what I was supposed to be? Just try not to be hateful, that is all I ask. Thanks.
3 AnswersDancing3 years agoWant advise, first solo dance?
Hi All,
I was told by my teacher last night that I can do the solo that I asked for. It's my 10th year of dance so I'm pretty used to recitals and all that by now. What I am looking for are pointers or things to make sure that I pay attention to as I learn the choreography or practice the choreo. I don't know what song yet as we haven't started yet, but I know the theme is Peter Pan. My first objective is to make sure that I am in really good shape and will be hitting the gym as much as I possibly can. Got to look good when you are on stage alone. :)
3 AnswersDancing4 years agoHow do you think I did? ACRO class video?
Summer acro class, 4 weeks, 6 girls ranging in age from 10 to me at 2 months away from 40. There were a few tricks that I didn't tape cause I forgot to (straddle & pike jumps) or weren't able to do (back kickover- I was so close but could get over from vertical) But based on this video from 4 years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IJ33vt_mDQ do you think the roundoff and cartwheels look better back then or do they look better now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTXmJAugGDQ I think they look better now, based off the fact I didn't have to have a running start to do them. So how do you think I did for my age? Did this inspire you to try something new, did it make you think "Hey if she can do it, I can try too"? I know the girls in class were impressed and I heard one of them say, "I'm about to be shown up". The Teacher told me I was her hero for doing as well as I did. With the exception of the video I did 4 years ago, some of the things we did in class I haven't done in 20+ years.
1 AnswerDancing4 years agoCan you see improvement? Mintchips?
So, I wanted to know if you could see an improvement in the group overall from last year. One of the ladies learned almost half the dance in 3 weeks taught by us who dance in a group with her while the teacher worked on cleaning up other things. I think she did great considering that. (She is an accountant and tax season makes it tough to attend class). We had another new girl this year and her sister in law is thinking of joining us next year. :) The video quality isn't the best, but it's what I have. I think that this year's dance is technically harder than last years. So please let me hear what you think. This was the first of two run throughs and the first time on stage so spacing will be a little off. Remember, these are moms, we dance for fun and we try hard, so please don't be too harsh on us.

Bonus: Adult Intermediate Ballet rehearsal--1st time on a very tiny stage and the first night all 7 of us were together to perform it. The next day during the recital, I was a little early finishing the adagio and created a ripple that the teacher said "worked" and looked good. Some times screw ups work in our favor. I am in the second group to do the adagio and it's more of a class demo then a true choreographed dance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yUQfmhvC3w&t=3s

1 AnswerDancing4 years agoSolo time?
Hi all,
I wanted to get your opinion on solos. Not for this year, but next year will be my 10th year dancing and I will also be turning 40. I think that the time is right to ask about doing a solo. I would like to do a jazz solo as it's my strongest style. What do you think about adults doing solos at a recital? I know it's not something you would normally see. I was planning on asking my teachers soon what their opinion is of course, but I wanted to get your opinions too. I can post links to group dances I have done if you want to see me dance. Thank you in advanced for taking the time to read and answer the question. :)
3 AnswersDancing4 years agoDoes anyone else do this?
Hi all, 2 quick questions for you.
1. When I sing I find myself moving my hand like a conductor to the music. While I might not follow it correctly, I just find that it helps me. I don't know when I picked it up, I sang in the choir at church and played the clarinet in middle school. Does anyone else do this?
2. The other thing that I noticed the other day was when I sing I find myself imitating the vocal style of the person I am listening to. I don't do it intentionally, but it always seems to happen. What I mean is it's still my voice (obviously) but I will take on a bit of accent or tone so that I am copying the singer, is this "normal"?
Thanks everyone for reading/answering me. :)
3 AnswersPerforming Arts4 years agoPleco question?
I was wondering what your opinions are are on keeping plecos when you have an under gravel filter.
The tank has been in constant function since 1998, had a few different set ups with fresh water fish since then, it's a 29 gallon. Right now we have 2 silver dollars and 2 rainbow fish. We were thinking of adding a pleco. What do you think?
3 AnswersFish4 years agoWays to improve?
I have been playing around with photography for a while, nothing too serious. I know that I have been improving but there is always room to get better. I think pic is one of my best recent shots. What could I have done to make it better, if anything? These pics were taken with a Nikon P100 (point & shoot), https://kittyscott.shutterfly.com/27758
I have also been taking a LOT of shots of dew/rain drops on grass leaves, can you give me some feedback and ways to improve them? https://kittyscott.shutterfly.com/27925#27924
1 AnswerPhotography5 years agoRecital time video?
I would like your opinions on how we as a class and how I did individually? Yes I know there were a few mistakes made by the other dancers and some of them were dancing for the first time or first time in years, so go easy on them. I am the third on stage and I know I hit everything and it felt great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT_BQA3vTnI
4 AnswersDancing5 years agoDo you like this cute little combo?
For the last 3 weeks we worked on this fun little number to see how the new girls dance and can catch on to things. It's very simple but who cares it was just for fun. Another student in class just told me the best compliment on this: You make it look effortless. Like breathing" What do you think? https://youtu.be/c9kHsPoJr0c
4 AnswersDancing5 years agoA waste of time?
If someone is allergic to wine, should they become a chef or would it be a waste of time due to the amount of wine used in cooking?
5 AnswersFood Service5 years agoI need ideas to help with certain ballet steps.?
There are two steps that I have a lot of difficulty with at the barre if they are done in the same combination. If they are done separately I can do them without confusion but in combinations together I get all jumbled and it turns into a merge of the two steps and nothing is done right...
The two steps I am having trouble with are pas de cheval and enveloppe. Any hints for moving the working leg in the correct motion?
1 AnswerDancing5 years agoSo, how did I do?
Recital video came, I am the 3rd one on stage. I want to know how you think I did. Personally, I hit every move, on time and I feel great about it. It was a perfect performance, for me. The others in class did struggle in places but they have only been dancing for a year or two (if they danced before it would be 15-20 years ago) so please don t be harsh with them.
1 AnswerDancing5 years agoWant opinions.....?
So I have been dancing for 8 years now and I have only been involved in recitals since I started when I was 31 and I thought this was the only option. Well I was at a bbq over the weekend and a classmate of mine told me that the competition they went to has a 25+ category. I didn't know that and now I am wondering if I should approach my teacher about maybe trying to be in the comp in some fashion, a small group, duo/trio, I think I would hold off on asking about a solo until the following year when it will be my tenth year of dance. What I want to know is, would you do it if you were in my place? If you want to see how well I dance (in order to help you make up your mind), here is a link to last year's dance. I don't have this year's dvd yet. Remember it was the first year of adult jazz so the choreography is a bit simple. I start center stage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF4MSHNc15I
1 AnswerDancing5 years agoA random Dance Moms question.?
Ok, I normally don't watch Dance Moms cause I don't care for Abby, but I did binge watch a few episodes from this year. While I know she has checked out with all the legal problems she has, why would she insist that the kids know everything and don't really need classes? As a teacher shouldn't she be encouraging them to take more classes and continue to work and improve technique? She has said they know what they need to know, they should know how to stretch, they have been taught technique, I don't need to teach them. Why would anyone let their kid learn from someone who thinks by age 10 you know everything you need to know?
2 AnswersDancing5 years agoNeed some help on a ballet move, please.?
So last night was my 3rd ballet class in which I was the only person who showed up. So instead of doing our normal thing, she asked if there was anything I wanted to try. Well, there is one thing that I have been wanting to tackle and we went over the mechanics of the step, and I tried it a few times. I had watched a youtube video in the past so I had the basic gist of what to do, but she broke it down even more....what was the move? Italian Fouettes. And guess what, I was able to get very close a few times and I did do one that I would consider "clean". My biggest problem is brushing the leg through First and turning into the back attitude. Since that isn't something that I have done in class it's not easy. Besides the obvious, "keep practicing" and just plain old "repetition"; does anyone have any suggestions for me that could make that part of the step easier? Italian Fouettes in case you are familiar with them, look like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtrgKD6bg8g
3 AnswersDancing6 years agoWhat is your opinion about quick choreography with slow songs?
When it comes to watching So You Think You Can Dance, I don't care about the backstories of the dancers, I fast forward to the dances or check them out online. In the past there have been some really good dances and some not so good dances. This year I have found myself questioning the choreographers choices more than in the past and the dances just don't hold my attention like they used to. So these are the two dances that I saw and went--what did I just watch?
1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wk8_i7jTBs8
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk-50aBT_8o
I think the dances were well executed, but I don't think the songs and choreography went together at all...what do you think about these dances, am I off the mark, did you like them or not and why?
1 AnswerDancing6 years agoHow did we do?
This is a repost--before anyone gets upset, I AM NOT posting this just to get views...I want to know what you thought of our dance, the surprise in it, did you like the costumes, the choreography, how did I do? (I start center stage) If you didn't like it, why didn't you? What could we have done differently or better? This is from the dress rehearsal, the recital went even better and we killed it. The audience loved it and I really hope you find it entertaining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF4MSHNc15I
3 AnswersDancing6 years agoIt's video time!!?
I want your opinions on our jazz dance. This was the first year the school had adult jazz and we had the big idea to bring our non-dancing husbands on stage with us...It was a complete surprise to the audience and they LOVED IT!. They went crazy with laughter and applause. I hope that you all find it just as entertaining...BTW, I start center stage and my hubby was Spider-Man. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF4MSHNc15I
