Why does WIC no longer give vouchers for soy milk?

A friend of mine has a 2 year-old that is allergic to dairy, but she is on WIC and they no longer will give vouchers for soy milk or cheese. With all of the kids that are now allergic to dairy why would they choose to take that away? The mom is disabled, as are both of her kids so she can't work. Soy products are expensive and puts a big dent in her food budget.

Update:

Thank you. When I see her next time I will tell her to ask her doctor.

Update 2:

She tried the Pediasure and she can't drink that either. I thought they were dairy free, but my friend said that when she read the ingredients there is something in them that her daughter cannot have and it makes her sick.

Update 3:

Cheese has MILK in it. She is allergic to ALL dairy, not just milk.

Update 4:

She can't have Lactaid Milk. It is STILL DAIRY, and it is not just an intolerance, she is ALLERGIC. It is not the formula she has the problem getting, it is soy MILK. She is 2 and not on formula anymore.

There is a form that the WIC office has in cases like this. The doctor has to fill out the form. My son couldn't even drink the soy milk, now he drinks pediasure. It's very expensive, but WIC covers it, with the doctors orders. I am not sure about the regular soy milk, I know they give soy formula. Once a child that is allergic to dairy gets to the age of 2 they don't need the dairy. The vitamins and calcium can come from other things. Soy milk actually has a lot of negative benefits if you really read up on it. They made my son try regular milk at around the age of 18 months. He ended up having an allergy, but that was to cow's milk protein. Soy milk contains this same protein. So maybe that is why WIC isn't honoring it. It could just be an intolerance and that isn't considered an allergy or medical condition.

There must be some kind of misunderstanding with your friend and the WIC office...I know when I had my son, he was totally lactose intolerant....I had to give him soy formula, more specifically Similac Soy...and only that...anything else, and I did try other types of formula along with milk-based, just to see if it was an allergy he'd maybe grown out of...as most kids do...But I could never take him off of Soy, because it messed his tummy up so bad...I informed his pediatrician of this, along with my history of lactose intolerance and IBS, and the nutritionist at the WIC office...we all mutually came to the conclusion that my child absolutely had to have soy-based formula...and eventually, once it was time to move on to milk, my son was given WIC checks for Lactaid milk, which was wonderful for him and tastes EXACTLY like milk...and didn't hurt his tummy or mine...There should be no reason they'd deny your friend...It's a medical condition and should be taken seriously...I would definitely get the pediatrician in on this and talk to a nutritionist, have them two talk if you can, and get this settled...There's no excuse!! Baby's gotta eat!! And so does mom!! Good luck and best wishes for your friend and her babies!!

Have your friend get a doctors note stating that the kids cannot have milk. WIC will probably be able to help. If WIC will not help have your friend go to the local food bank, or infant needs bank.
