What is the furthest distance you would walk/ bike to avoid driving?
As the cost of fuel rises, how far would you be willing to walk/ ride your bike, before deciding that it is too far and the trip requires a car?
I'm pretty lucky, I'm close to alot of the places where I go so I can walk or bike pretty much anywhere. But I was wondering what peoples limits are.

Probably 2-3 miles.
But it's easy to say "oh yeah, I would do it" this time of year.
How about in January, when it's colder than hell, it's raining, the wind is blowing, etc?
Of how about when you have errands to run afterwards, or when you have a bunch of crap that you need to take somewhere, etc.
That's why (nothing personal) I just don't believe most people when they say they would do this, because they're not thinking about all this, and they just say "yes" because it makes them feel better about themselves.
They aren't actually doing to do anything at all, they're just lying to themselves by saying "I would do it IF..."

Well, considering that I don't have a car, pretty far!
In the area that I live, it really depends on the season. Between November and March, it is just too cold and snowy to ride a bike, and it can make walking extremely difficult too. I love this place, but a constant -15F or lower and a couple of feet of accumulation can really slow a guy down.
But this time of year, I would go seven or eight miles one way. That's really about the extent of my town... anything further requires me getting on one of two major highways, and that's not safe for a pedestrian or a cyclist.
It kind of depends on what my time frame is, too. If I have the time to spare, then sure, I'll take the green option. I usually do... I walk and ride pretty much everywhere. But if I have to get to the other side of town quickly, I'm going to bum a ride with someone or take the bus.

For now my wife, son, and daughter bike a little over a mile each night to the playground so they can play. I bike 10 miles each day. Since I can do work at home I don't have to drive, if I had to, I would be willing to bike 10 miles one way. I would drive during the winter months, but when the weather allows in the summer I really enjoy biking.

If I didn't have to carry much more that my lunch I would bike about 10 miles to work. I did that when I worked in as a bartender. My work now requires me to have more tools than I could carry on a bicycle so the question is moot. I miss riding my bike to work. I could eat as much as I wanted and still not gain weight. As for walking, 2 miles is about as far as I would be willing to go.

Here in San Francisco I can walk from Point A to Point B to Point C. It is so easy to get around here, and the walks seem short since everything is closeby where I live. I've walked from Golden Gate Bridge to Castro. So distance is not much of a difference for me.

13 miles. That's my commute to work, which takes me about an hour on bike. I wouldn't want to go much further, because 2 hours of commuting per day is a pretty long time. When I go somewhere like the grocery store, I usually take the car (Prius) since I can't carry much on my bike, although a few times I've gone on my electric moped.
As for walking, it would be very short, because I'd prefer to bike in order to save time over walking!

depends on time and what I am going for.
of course grocery shopping you need a car...with all the bags
going to eat, might walk 4-5 blocks
going to the bar I would walk 10-15 blocks because I know I shouldn't be driving back...Thankfully the bars are within that range for me.

I bike all the time, it's good for you. Sometimes I bike to my friends house which is about 3.5 miles away. Then I have to bike back, another 3.5 miles. And a lot of times we do more biking. I can get in quite a few miles in a short period of time. Excellent exercise, and it's fun!

100 feet. If gas gets to high it won't be worth working. Live off the government and I can be like all the rest of the scum bags that have lived off my buck for 40 years. I will eat better, get free health care, housing paid for, utilities paid for, and a monthly check to buy beer and cigarettes with. I will be better off than I am now work two jobs.
