How many of you know the Military History of your own family.How do you honor them?

I do - back to the Revolution anyway.

I've spent the past week weeding the beds and planting new flowers at our Veteran's Memorial. I visit it occasionally just to say "Hi" to my Dad. His name is on it.

Thank you for your service, Erudite - especially on this very special week-end - although, in my obviously ignorant opinion, EVERY day should be Memorial Day.

Perhaps, we who have actually fought, or have ancestors who fought for our freedom, have a better appreciation of what it means.

In addition to three ancestors in the Revolution, I have several who fought for the Grand Army of the Republic in the War of Southern Rebellion, a few in Korea and one who was killed in Korea. My cousin is entombed in the U.S.S. Arizona.

My Father fought in WWII along with two of his Uncles and several cousins, all of whom, despite all odds, came home in one piece (except for the one in the Arizona, of course but, as you should know, he was killed before the War actually was "Declared"). The only one my family "missed out on" was the Great War, or WWI.

Now give me some more thumbs down.

My Grandfather served in WW One. My dad served in WW Two. My two uncles served in Korea and I served from 1969 to 1975. My nephew served (Is serving) now but hopes to be released from active duty after two years in the Marines. My Great Great Great Great Grand father served in the civil war. (Samuel Watkins)
