If they stay in the race long enough they can pay it back, but if not they lose it - NOW can everyone understand why Hillary is staying in the race - she doesn't want to be out all that money.....

a person is just plain stupid if they don't have the finances available before they throw their hat in the ring to run for a political office, just because things happen, like they are happening to Hillary. She is aware, she has a portfolio, she can make up at least some of the money later on from work she does like the law firm, from speeches, from books, from other irons she has in the fire. But I suspect she also has borrowed from her husband's portfolio and savings (since he has nice retirement income from the government, but that he's still working and making bucks from speeches and from overseas work he's been doing, plus other things.

No the politician does not get compensated (in money form at least and not directly). They do get hired to do jobs though that bring them income.

Candidate loses that money. Law allows anyone to put in up to $25million of their own money.

most times they lose - Perot, Mondale, Hillary (whoops - too soon)

the nominating Party will normally pay off the losers debt/

if they stay in long enough they can get it paid back, if they don't then they made a big political contribution.

It's illegal to donate that much money ,so it has to be paid back
