Taiwan is not China. Such a statement is based on the following simple facts:
(1) Taiwan was ceded to Japan in 1895.
(2) The Japanese surrender ceremonies on Oct. 25, 1945, in Taiwan did not mean that the sovereignty of Taiwan was being transferred to China,
(3) In the post-war San Francisco Peace Treaty, the sovereignty of Taiwan was not awarded to China.
Hence, Taiwan is not Chinese territory.
The status of the Republic of China in Taiwan is (1) subordinate occupying power, beginning Oct. 25, 1945, and (2) government in exile, beginning mid-December 1949. The United States of America is the principal occupying power.
Today, Taiwan remains as occupied territory. As stated above, the United States of America is the principal occupying power.

Taiwan is the only remnant of a Democratically elected FREE China. In 1946 China made a democratic constitution. In 1949 China Military overthrows democratic Government. Millions flee to the island of Formosa now Taiwan.

Depending on who you ask, genetically Taiwan people are 99.6% Han Chinese. But only 70% of them recognise themselves as Chinese ethnicity. Taiwan officially call itself the Republic of China. So there is your answer.

technically, yes. Taiwan's government, The Republic of China, is the remnant of the democratic government that fled when the commies took over. It doesn't have as much power as the People's Republic of China, and when it gave up its seat in the UN over squabbles to the commies in the mainland, it technically became a part of China. While te governments are independent, the UN doesn't recognize the ROC as a country and neither does any other major nation.

Taiwan has been at least semi-independent from the mainland for most of the history of Chinese settlement there.

No i take back my former answer... it's actually Hong Kong I was thinking about. taiwan is an island that belongs to China. It is a territory of China.
The UN doesn't recognize it. I used to have some neighbors that were from Taiwan.. they were angry and very spiteful.

China clames them as part of their own, but they are dependent. The US is allies with Taiwan and gives them weapons.
