Question about Windows XP version??
I work alot of hours and have heard bits and pieces about Windows XP. Is it going to be useless? I have Windows XP installed on my computer and want to know if XP will still be able to be used? Will I have to upgrade to Vista? Is Vista expensive. Only informed answers, please. Thank you

Windows XP is not going to be "useless" anytime soon. Many computers can't even be upgraded to vista because they don't have the necessary hardware, memory, and processing requirements to handle vista. Windows XP is also very stable and many people will not want to give it up for vista, which still has some bugs. I wouldn't worry about it just yet. However, any new PC's you buy should have vista.
If you have Windows XP, you will want to install service pack 3 to get the latest functionality and security updates.

Microsoft supports their current operating system (presently Vista) and 1 previous version (XP). Each time they create a new operating system, they stop supporting 2 versions back. For instance, when Windows 98 was created they stopped supporting Windows 3.1. When XP was created they stopped supporting Windows 95. Vista came along and support for Windows 98 went away. When Microsoft creates their next operating system, they will stop supporting XP.
This does not mean your computer will stop working. You just won't be able to get any further updates after that time. It's very possible your XP computer will work forever (not withstanding any hardware failures). But software and hardware manufacturers will continue to move forward, eventually making is impossible to buy new programs or hardware upgrades (try finding software that's compatible with Windows 3.1 these days!).
Truthfully, though... by the time they stop supporting XP, you will probably have bought a new computer anyway. Realistically we're looking at 3 to 5 years time frame and... well, computers seem real slow after they get to be 2 or 3 years old (because everyone else has a newer, faster one by then). So, I wouldn't really sweat it. The price of tea in China is more relevant.

No you don't have to upgrade to Vista. XP will not be useless as many more programs coming out today can't survive without being compatible with XP. Vista, though the latest version of windows, is causing a myriad of problems for PC users and some software, though they are modern aren't compatible with Vista.

I am using WinXP and plan on sticking with it for a while. I know that they are getting to where all computers will come with Vista, a few have the option to come with XP but i think that is ending soon.
As far as upgrading, i would get the tool to see if your computer will work with vista. Usually you can find it on Microsoft webpage. You need at least 1 gb of RAM, but i should shoot for 2 gb. But not sure how old your computer is, but depending on that depends on your expensive because you might have to upgrade hardware for Vista to run smoothly.
Also depends on what version of Vista you want, can range from 99.00 for the basic to about 200.00 or more (dont remember the price for the version of Vista that has all the bells and whistles).

From everything I have heard, Windows XP is better than Vista & will be around for quite a while. Vista has problems that hopefully they will work out in time.

Keep your Windows XP.
You dont have to upgrade to vista.

WinXP will still work. It's just that Microsoft will no longer provide new updates for it after June 30, 2008. So according to the Microsoft Windows Life-Cycle Policy it will be "dead".
