Non-Catholic Christians, do you recognize and abhor the sin of Onanism?

Until the twentieth century, all Christian churches viewed the sin of Onan as a moral evil (sin). [Genesis 38] This forbids the use of contraception and also the act of masturbation. It wasn't until the 1930s when the Anglican church accepted the use of contraception that all other Christian churches began to follow suit. What does your church teach about the sin of Onanism and those things that fall under it such as contraception and masturbation?

I know what the Bible teaches (Genesis 38 and the story of Onan) but what does your church teach. Or is the subject completely ignored in your Sunday school classes?

Update:

David P, With all due respect, children do not lead people to violate God's commands. My best friend and her husband have seven children. Lots of Catholics have many more than she does and they lead holy lives. These people are the exception, not the rule, and it is because of their total commitment to God that they are able to rear holy children. I have a disability therefore I can only handle four and God understands that perfectly. If you can only handle two, that's fine, but to come on here and say that there is such a thing as "too many children" in a family AS A RULE is balderdash..........not just to me, but to many many other families both Catholic and protestant.........and to God.

Utterly, totally and completely ignored in my Baptist Sunday School. Lots of stuff was. That's why I'm no longer a Baptist.

Before we go breaking our arms trying to pat ourselves on the back, every church I know of (including the Mother Church) has some sins of omission or commission in its past.

    You're right, though.

By the way, it's true that the Head of the Church has never had sex. But since he's never murdered a person, should he be required to not preach against murder? I mean, after all: what does HE know.

I have to admit there are a lot of Catholics who ignore Church teaching on contra....SEXUAL SUICIDE, but I know of no other church that condemns contr.....SEXUAL SUICIDE as intrinsically evil, as does the Catholic Church.

Proof that is it intrinsically evil are the alarming divorce rates for couples who contracept (50-70%) compared with those who practice Natural Family Planning. (<4%) And all we here from Protestants is how wrong we are.

    What is Sexual Suicide?http://www.therealpresence.org/archives/Faith_and_...

Little girls do not grow up dreaming of hopping from bed to bed and contraception. They dream of a man who will sweep them off their feet and love them forever, and of having his many children. A cynicism born of the sexual revolution has brought emptiness to the hearts, wombs and lives of far too many modern women. This emptiness and pain can be avoided or redeemed and healed by the love of Christ and adherence to His teachings. The Catholic Church believes in such dreams because God wrote them on the human heart. And there are men who long for such a woman to love and cherish.

Real lovers want to give without reserve in God's own superabundance creating more hearts and lives to love. Contraception is like kissing through a screen door and real love cannot tolerate obstacles. Contraception breeds selfishness and separation that drives a wedge between husband and wife that kills love. Real lovers want their love to explode into the posterity of future generations for all eternity. This is the kind of passion and fulfillment God wants for His children.

Contraception limits what should be boundless. It spits in the face of this glorious passion and love's true abandon; and that is why it is a sin. It seeks to "tame" love, thus killing it.

The Catholic Church is the last bastion on earth of true romance. The modern world has suffocated love and made sex a thing of deadness.

................But Onan, rebelling at the idea that his own child will be credited to Er, tries to pull a fast one. He does begin to perform his duty with Tamar -- several times, in fact. But, each time, he withdraws at the crucial moment. It is this outrageous shirking of duty that so displeases Yahweh, not the method Onan uses to spill his seed -- which is technically coitus interruptus...............................

    Cheers!

My church teaches that we have the responsibility to care for our children, and to bring them up in a good christian home, as Jesus commanded. Therefore, if we had 10 children instead of 2, they would all be running wild because we would not have the time to watch 10 children properly, monitor their behavior and make sure that they are on the right path. This would lead us to violate Gods direct commands.

So, while my church accepts contraception, it rejects masturabtion.

My church does not teach about masturbation. It is a bit of a taboo subject.

I do not know about the Sunday school class but do not remember that being preached any where although I have read it in the bible. I am not sure it is being interpreted right by the pope who has apparently never sex.

Sorry, the Catholics miss the entire meaning of this scripture. It has nothing to do with sex for procreation only, nor does it deal with masturbation. The lesson here is to cooperate with your spouse on deciding whether or not to have children.

Anyone trying to use that story as a training module for anything is barking up the wrong tree and teaching from a wrong premise !!!

Onan's sin was that he disobeyed a direct order to impregnate his brother's widow.

It has nothing to do with spilling or not spilling his seed or where it was spilled.

It has EVERYTHING to do with his disobedience.

That's unfortunate. My general passivity and nonviolence may be directly attributed to the fact that I masturbate constantly. I'd hate to think what selfish narcissistic crimes i'd commit on humanity if i weren't to busy wanking.
