Vitamin B12?

So here's the question:

I'm told that B-12 is only effective when intoduced by syringe intramuscular. Such as if you have Pernicious Anemia. I'm also told that taking B-12 orally in pill/capsule form is no good because (like insulin) should you ingest it the acid in the stomach destroys the components and it becomes useless. may as well swallow a pebble.

So....why is B-12 sold in the stores in the vitaman section if swallowing it serves no purpose?

Hey. Very low B12 intakes can cause anaemia and nervous system damage. The only reliable vegan sources of B12 are foods fortified with B12 (including some plant milks, some soy products and some breakfast cereals) and B12 supplements. Vitamin B12, whether in supplements, fortified foods, or animal products, comes from micro-organisms. Most vegans consume enough B12 to avoid anaemia and nervous system damage, but many do not get enough to minimise potential risk of heart disease or pregnancy complications. To get the full benefit of a vegan diet, vegans should do one of the following: Eat fortified foods two or three times a day to get at least three micrograms (µg or mcg) of B12 a day. Take one B12 supplement daily providing at least 10 micrograms. Take a weekly B12 supplement providing at least 2000 micrograms.

That is not true. While IM administration is more effective, oral B12 is not useless. If that were true, how would you absorb B12 from food?

Oral B12 is normally combined with intrinsic factor which your stomach produces, and then is absorbed by the small intestine. If you have pernicious anemia, you lack the intrinsic factor and therefore can't absorb the B12. However, for a normal person without pernicious anemia, B12 suppliments DO have an effect.

Absorption of B12 requires the secretion from the cells lining the stomach of a glycoprotein, known as intrinsic factor. The B12-intrinsic factor complex is then absorbed in the ileum (part of the small intestine) in the presence of calcium.

Vitamin B12 can be stored in small amounts by the body. Total body store is 2-5mg in adults. Around 80% of this is stored in the liver.

Vitamin B12 is excreted in the bile and is effectively reabsorbed. This is known as enterohepatic circulation. The amount of B12 excreted in the bile can vary from 1 to 10ug (micrograms) a day.

Wow - I did not know this!

BUT - I do take B12 daily and if I miss a day, I feel run down.

So - does this mean that it was all in my head??
