Help with decorating black furniture!?

Hi, I have black microsuede furniture in our living room, I'm having an extremely hard time coming up with a color for the walls, curtains and decor pillows! Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks so much!

You could use something like this and paint the walls a light icy blue for a sophisticated look. Add blues in pillows, candles, flowers, and art work too.

or something like this with the same shade on the wall:

If you don't like the blue idea, you could paint the walls a soft celery green and use something like this:

For a warm, cozy look, paint the walls a sandy shade of beige or mocha and use this color draperies:

Return the comforter and sheets and get a black and white pattern, a grey, or a brassy golden color. With all that black furniture, you need BRASS lamps and accessories. Consider brass switchplates on the wall for the lights, etc. The bedding should have some white or gold or both in it. Those white walls are going to reflect a lot of light and help make the room look less black -- you need lithographs or prints (all from a single "school" of painting, probably all with brass metal frames). This is a very formal bedroom, think about lightening it up with a large stuffed animal or something comical.

Black is one of the easiest colors to coordinate with. The question is, what style are you going for? That will determine the color of the walls and other elements. If you're looking to warm up the place, warm shades of green or yellow (more like butter yellow) do well with black. You can't go wrong with the right shade of cool blue (no pastels).

To have a sophisticated pallette, limit yourself to 3 or 4 colors in a room. For example, in my room I only used butter yellow for the walls, white-black print for the beddings and white and black furniture, then spiced it up with accents of cool green and deep rose (a vase, a pillow, a lamp shade). This gave the room a soothing but interesting ambiance.

Don't use too many patterns or prints unless you're going for a kitschy look or a country look.

Your nearest paint store should have pictures/catalogs on display near the color cards. These should help you find the look you're going for. If you're torn between two or three colors, ask for the small cartons of paint. You can try all the colors on your wall near your sofa so you can see which works the best with the furniture and the lighting in the room.

I would reapolter the couch. OR you could use white and black together. Maybe find some curtains that are white with some black flowers on the bottoms. If you have kids then i wouldnt go with white and black. But, for the walls I would do an off white shade. But if you dont like plain add some red in there. Like maybe do a white wall with a few patterns with red and black on the wall.

The walls could be painted light gray, white, or light blue. I would recommend a color called "Sleepy Blue" from Sherwin William's. It is a light gray/blue and will coordinate well with your furniture. You may want to choose sheer white panels for your curtains. Your pillows could have blue, gray, white and black in them. They don't need to have all four of those colors in them, just two is fine. Choosing art for the walls that have black frames, will be very pretty. You can make this work!!! The site below will take you to the color visualizer section, so you can check out the color I chose for you. Paint it on their walls, before painting it on your own.

IMHO I would go with eggshell white on the walls with paintings done in Grey tones. Grey also for the throw pillows and darker Grey for drapes. This keeps you from having the dull blah of plain white walls yet still having the contrast. The Grey tones will help break up the colors and provide a blend to mellow the sharp contrast of Black & White.

id paint the room in deep cranberry red. and if you have chair rail and base boards and such..paint those a neutral tan color. id choose a stripe print for curtains and pillows. mustard yellow is always a good color for pillows. not to mention you could get a few solid colors in those as well. a nice throw blanket wouldnt be a bad idea either :)

You need to offset the blackness with something light. If you go with a crisp white (which some would consider boring, I know) you will have a great contrast. You can then pick a third color to use as an accent....for throw cushions, drapes, etc. Something red, or a plum maybe.

As a house painter for 30 years, your best bet is to stick with a neutral color such as Navajo White, China White, or Bone White. Its put out by Benjamin Moore Paints.

Try white. Black and white is classic in looks. To bring some color in, use pastel pink, lavender and blue in flower arrangement with black and white basis. Black and white rules!!! Remember to add some fresh plants, too. Happy decorating.

Dunn Edwards has a collection of Celestial Whites, which are really extremely pale colors (look white in some light, and change hue throughout the day) .... You might pick the palest yellow and use stark white and bright yellow accessories...or the palest green and use white and bright green accessories.....
