What are some great American vacation spots?
During the summer a foreign exchange student from Germany will be staying with my family and me and we would like to take her to lots of true American places to have the full experience while she is here. She is 16 and so am I so what are good places for teenagers? We live close to Philadelphia, the Jersey Shore, New York, DC, and Boston so what are destinations besides these popular places?

Well, besides natural wonders like Niagara Falls, The Grand Canyon, Northern California with all the redwoods and Mount Rushmore, places that are important in American history would be great. You live in the best part of the country, let me tell you! So you mentioned Boston, but how about Virginia (where America began, even before New England)? There's civil war stuff in Gettysburg, PA. and maybe go to an American Indian Reservation for a festival or something (upstate NY has a bunch). Amish country is interesting... they have an "Amish Village" somewhere around Lancaster I think? You can buy good food and tour and stuff...
For "typical" American vacations, you have Disney World, and pretty much anything in Florida. Aspen for the winter sports. Cabin in the Poconos or Vermont or something. Then there's Las Vegas...
Things that were fun for me growing up: the Franklin Institute, The Baltimore Aquarium, Philly Zoo, Great Adventure, Dorney Park, the Boardwalk, etc!
I tried listing things not right in your area, although it is hard for me to think of things since I am also from that area, lol...
There's a lot to choose from. I think it will just come down to budget and whether you want to fly, drive, etc.

When I was 16 and lived there, I loved going to the Boardwalk at the Jersey Shore in the summer. I also liked going to the mountains and hiking the Appalachian Trail. I thought it was fun to go to NYC and watch the people walk by as we sipped coffee in an outside cafe. Of course I wanted to go up in the Empire State Building and look all around, visit FAO Schwarz, Rockefeller Center, and take in an off-Broadway musical, walk through Chinatown, etc. Hope your student enjoys the visit!

I'd like to mount a campaign to encourage people not to go anywhere. Travel has become so expensive and unpleasant that it's hard to understand why people don't stay home.
Why are we crowding our highways and airports to get someplace else? Newspapers and magazines are filled with ads trying to get us to travel. They want us to go somewhere - anywhere but home.
