Topping the Ball?
I find that I hit the top of the ball with my Irons (not off the tee) . Any idea how to stop doing that? My divots are behind the ball, instead of in front. Am I placing the ball wring in my stance? Is it an arm thing? A pivot thing? A i really stink at this game and should through my clubs into the water hazard around the 8th fairway thing?
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

You could be coming up "out of your shot".
You're probably loosing all of your angles.. most importantly your spine angle.
When people say to "keep your head down", what you are really doing is maintaining your bent over spine angle through the entire shot. You must maintain a bent over spine angle, or all sorts of inconsistancies will result.

Play the ball in the middle of your stance for irons and count to 3 with your head looking at the ground after you hit the ball.

You're not staying down and through on your shots. Your spine angle changes or you "come out" of your stance; maintaining the flex in your knees. Once you make good contact with the ball, you will be able to see it. Watch yourself hit the ball. Especially on shots from 100 yards or more. Plenty of time to see the ball.

I find that a tee shot and a ground shot are no different. You must hit the sweet spot. Choke up if you catch it fat, and choke down if you hit it thin. Try to emphasize on accelerating all the way through the ball. This will make your imperfect swing get better results. Dw

I have a very simple answer to solve your problem that has worked for me. Practice keeping your head down and play the ball more towards the middle back of your stance. You will hit the ball great! Smack E'm!

topping the ball could mean one of a couple things
try over-exaggerating keeping your head down. on your swing, after you make contact, keep your head down for a 1...2... count and then pick up your head, this will help keep your head down
it could be your ball placement. if the ball is too far forward in your stance you will catch the ball on your up swing and that can make you top it.
i would suggest going to a driving range to work on these things

If you keep your head down, follow through, don't lift your shoulders, and use stiff wrists when you hit you won't top the ball. I used to top the ball, then i did this and I average a 68 on 18 holes.

concentrate on hitting the back of the ball and make sure u always keep ur head down. visualize htting ur club into the groud andthat will alloe u to get under the ball and pop it up into the air

Focus on keeping your head down. Have some with you watch the flight of the ball. You keep focusing on the ground...
