What is a troll?

I have heard a lot of people calling a lot of seemingly different people "troll". What is the common denominator? What do you mean by "troll"?

Someone who posts a question or answer and is not who they say they are. They post something to get a rise out of whoever they are targeting.

An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and usually irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic.

And that's all I know about that. Ü

Giant humanoid creatures, with lots of hair and large facial features, which typically live under bridges. The invention of wireless Internet has allowed them online access, and now they post controversial, insincere, irrelevant messages with the intention of irritating people. They do this as a way of baiting users out of their homes where they will, hopefully, walk close enough to a bridge to be grabbed and eaten.

I restrict the use of the word to those who (usually obviously) misrepresent themselves as someone they disagree with so they can make that person look evil or stupid.

I really don't mind if someone is deliberately trying to get a rise out of me. I often enjoy it.

But, please, "Hi, I'm an atheist and I got fourteen abortions this year alone because I'm a baby killer with no morals and I was wondering where I can get my nails done?."

Or - "I'm a Christian who likes to crucify gays at my barbecues - anyone want ribs?"

    You get the picture.

  • i hate to say it but i once knew a short guy with a big beard and also saw this little troll dolls with blue or green beard which remind me of him. so i guess my friend is kind of like a troll.

but some people use it as a derogatory term, but after looking at those dolls and my friend a troll is just really a loveable little person.

and they live under bridges and eat children who come stomping over their bridge.

Trolls are people who ask malicious questions just to get attention and stir up strife. But sometimes trolls also ask patently absurd questions just to be funny. I appreciate the second type, while I loathe the first.

Someone who posts a question with no purpose other than to stir up anger and controversy is a troll. Generally their quesitons are along the line of; "Have you stopped beating your wife lately?"

There are many different kinds of trolls; but the primary thing they have in common is that they deliberately write inflammatory questions, answers, and comments meant to inflame and insult people, and draw people's ire or simply piss them off. The other thing they have in common is that they serve no purpose.
