I'm having an grand opening at my store and wanted some ideas of things I could do that day to make it special
for the customers and something they will remember and want to come back to my store. Some of my friends said I could have snow cones and popcorn outside as a free gift.
it is a women's clothing store

How about free hookers? Bet they would remember that. And I bet they might even come back. I'm sorry, had to do that.
About anything free will interest them and probably get them to come back. Have them sign up for a big gift to be drawn at the end of the week. That way you have a whole week to get people in. I gave away a portable color tv for a drawing. You can get thes eat any discount store for less than a couple hundred dollars.I had a convenience store and gave away free coffee for a year. It only cost me about $600.00 but was well worth it. I also gave away free oil changes and tune-ups. Another time I had a drawing for a portable barbeque grill. You were very vague about what kind of store but I would ask your suppliers to donate something for a grand opening. Most of them are set up to be able to do something like that. I would recommend that if you are just starting out with a new business, do something new like this each month for about 6 months.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

The typical thing to do where I live in Australia is put on a Sausage Sausage Sizzle for a Grand Openings.
If you haven't done one before this is what you do.
1.Buy several kilo's of sausages
2. lots of loaves of sliced bread
3. 1/2 a dozen bottles of Ketchup
4. lots and lots of onions.
5. Couple of volunteer cooks.
6. Flat tray BBQ. with a spare gas bottle.
7. Table for serving.
8. Paper serviettes.
Cook loads of sausages and onions. Place a slice of bread on a serviette, then the cooked sausage and onion on the bread and let the put there own Ketchup on the food.
The smell alone of the cooking sausages and onions will bring people to your Grand Opening. If you are not from Australia you may not of heard of Sausage Sizzles, but they are always a big hit with customers. If you want to make big impression with your customers I think this could do the job.
I found this picture in Google Images for you to have a look at. This a policeman being the cheif for a sausage sizzle.

PS. I also like your idea having Snow Cones and Popcorn. Maybe even add balloons for the kids. You can hire the bottles that have the gas in them to blow up the Balloons.

Maybe have a mini fashion show with different items from your store ie. work outfit, casual outfit, beach outfit, shopping outfit, so that people can get ideas of how to mix/match your items and you may also sell complete outfits to make some money. Kids are out of school so maybe you could get some teenagers from your local school to do it for free, maybe some college kids in the fashion department at your local college?? Free giveaways are always a plus, free food is good too, maybe find a bakery in your area that can make you some cookies decorated like clothes. The sex and the city thing is big now, maybe go with that theme.
