Wet or Dry?
I have an 11 year old DSH Tom cat who I've had for 3 years. We fed him i/2 pouch of wet food am and pm for three years. Recently he started being sick as he was eating too fast. We decided this was probably cos he was famished so thought free feeding would be best. I weigh out the dry food every day and let him have what it says and he helps himself when hungry. He's no longer sick but now FAT! Anyone have any ideas re what's best for feeding?

I'm sure some one will report me for saying this but a WET food diet is more healthy than just dry food, it's much like eating dry cereal your whole life.
My cats do not eat a wet food only diet, they are just too picky so what I've learned and have been told by many vets is to do a small combo of both wet and dry.
For example my cats get 1/4 cup of dry food every 24 hours, if the eat it all at once they have to wait till the next day. At night I feed them either a wet canned food like Wellness or Natures Variety. My cats are not only healthy I've never had a problem with their weight and or teeth.
I've enclosed a couple sites that will help you decide what is best for your cat. I did years or research trying to find out which was really best and I have come to the understanding that a BARF or natural diet would be best but they don't live in the wild and they can't eat like they live in the wild. I just can't feed them that!!!
Best of luck and hope that the websites provide you with the information in which you need to make the decision that is best for your cat.

Yes.
Toss the dry food and stick with the wet. The dry food made him fat and on top of that, it's not good for cats especially males who are more prone to urinary issues.
Are you sure that he was throwing up because he ate too fast, or might there have been another reason? Did you have him checked by a vet?
If it really is eating too fast, you could always spoon feed him. Not literally, but put just a little in the bowl, let him eat it, then add some more. It wouldn't take all that much time - maybe 5 minutes.
Or try another canned food but one with a different texture.

Put him on weight loss dry. Feed the recommended amount but space it over a feeding of 2 to 3 times a day. Watch him over the next couple of weeks. You can weigh him with you if you like to see if he has lost any. If not or he has gained, decrease the amount and continue for another couple of weeks. I think you get the idea. Funny how it is much easier to put weight on than it is to take it off.
I would do away with the wet food, or limit him to just a tsp or so a day. Decrease the dry accordingly if you are going to feed the wet.
You can always contact your vet and see what they recommend as well. Best of luck with him.

as cats get older weight gain does start to become a problem. i find a combination of both wet and dry food. for breakfast my tom gets half a pouch and for tea he gets the rest of the pouch. he always has a bowl of biscuits that he can come and get any time of the day. he also always has plenty of water. he is perfect weight and very healthy. wet and dry food both have advantages and disadvantages so it is important to get a balance. if you are concerned about your cat's weight talk to your vet, he will advise the right diet plan for your cat. good luck x

It is best to feed wet because cats are by nature meat eaters
If he is getting sick try switching to a different brand - once you find one that he does not get sick on then stick to it -
It does not hurt to feed dry but he should not be on a dry diet only - Dry food is full of by products that are not healthy for cats - Try mixing dry and wet together

My cat was getting sick also. I found out he was allergic to corn and wheat.
He currently gets dry food, that is available at all times. It is portioned, however. The kibble is spread out in the dish barley covering the bottom. This way he eats slower and less.
He also gets a couple of teaspoons of soft food as a treat in the evening (usually around six).

My cats are portly too.... Vet put them on weight management food, which they seem to enjoy but I had to cut out their beloved stinky food (wet food) and they had a short mutiny over that
