I'm not sure how you plan to "pop off the bottom of the can", but there are commercial devices made for safely puncturing and emptying aerosol cans. A hammer and nail and can opener or pliers is not a safe way to do it.
There may still be several ounces of flammable liquid inside the can even though the propellant appears to be exhausted. Plus, the liquid may be hazardous to you and the environment if consumed, spilled or disposed of improperly.
I have this sneaky suspicion that you are going to try to open your "empty" hairspray can anyway. Please think about this - About 5,000 people end up in U.S. emergency rooms each year from accidents with aerosol cans. Hopefully, you won't be one of them this year.

Don't do that whatever you do there is compressed gas in an aerosol can and it could explode and cause you an injury, that's why it says on the can DO NOT PUNCTURE!

MY GOD PLEASE IGNORE THE ADVISE OF MAKING A HOLE IN THE CAN. THESE CANS ARE FILLED UNDER PRESSURE AND WILL EXPLODE AND DO YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE A NASTY INJURY! AND GIVING THE CAN OF HAIR SPRAY TO A LITTLE KID TO PLAY WITH IS ADVISE GIVEN BY SOMEONE WITH NO BRAINS WHATSOEVER!
