Try to reinstall USB drivers that came with the computer/motherboard. Sometimes drivers can get wiped out by XP if it tries to update without going to the proper manufactures' website.

You didn't UPDATE to SERVICE PACK 2. Go to TOOLS in IE, then WINDOWS UPDATE and UPDATE.

After SERVICE PACK 2 is installed, the USB should work.

    If not.....

Right click on MY COMPUTER, select PROPERTIES.

Click on the HARDWARE tab, then select DEVICE MANAGER.

On the bottom of the list, should be the USB controller bus.

If you see a ! in front of something (in yellow), right click that item, and click UPDATE DRIVER.

If all else fails, UNINSTALL the complete USB controller bus and restart, windows should detect the ports then.

I had the same thing happen.

The USB ports work, it just that all things connected need to have their software re-installed. It will take some time.

He needs to RE-INSTALL EVERYTHING....printer, mouse, web cam, and any other programs and peripherals...including CD Drive (in my case it was DVD Player).
