The character of Daniel Plainview is amazing. One of the best performances in recent memory. The way he inhabits every aspect of the character is awe inspiring. He basically carries the film and never makes it dull, which is a lot because of its nearly 3 hour running time. Probably no other actor today could have pulled off that role the same way he did nor as good.

As for the character himself, Plainview is an extremely complex and conflicted man. His slow, methodical rise and evetual downfall is fascinating to watch, which is a tremendous compliment to Day Lewis' acting style and method. The way he uses people to achieve his own gains without care for their feelings is very realistic and symbolic of big business. His fierce conflict with religion symbolized by Eli Sunday is great to watch, they go back and forth so well.

The character really comes out in the end of course in the final two scenes in which he reveals to HW that he is not really his father and of course when he kills Eli Sunday. That scene is just perfect and wonderful to watch. The first time I saw it, I just sat there in the theater with my mouth wide open in surprise and amazement.

Plus he has some of the best lines of dialogue in recent films.

"You're a bastard in a basket" and of course, "I Drink your milkshake!"

Do you mean, "There Will Be Blood"? I think Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing in almost any role that he plays. He was phenomal and haunting in "There Will Be Blood". He was superb in "My Left Foot" and "In The Name Of The Father".
