HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA SONG @ $500/pop. WOULD YOU STILL WANT IT AT THAT PRICE?

I have just read on Yahoo Canada news that with last night's Stanley Cup game, the CBS will not renew it's contract for the Hockey Night in Canada Theme Song. Every time they play the song it costs $500. I thought I read it wrong but (quoted from Yahoo Canada News website)

"Copyright Music & Visuals says it had offered the CBC a chance to renew its licence to use her song on terms that were "virtually identical to those that have existed for the past decade." Each use of the song in the past has cost the broadcaster about $500, the company says".

FYI, song was written in 1968 by Dolores Claman. She even has a lawsuit pending for 'overuse'.

With this information in mind, would you like them to re-sign a new contract or get a new song?

HNIC loses between $30MM and $40MM annually for the CBC. Several times in the last decade the network would have made money if HNIC wasn't on their schedule.

Personally - I love the song - but at $500/pop, that's ridiculous. SOCAN, BMI and ASCAP pay artists pennies/song each time it's aired. It would be a lot cheaper to license a new song.

Re-sign... Hockey Night in Canada is the reason CBC make the money they make. Why slap us in the face like that after 40 years?

I would like to see them re-sign a contract. That song is tradition, I would be so upset if they let that song go.

The original HNIC song will live on in YouTube, and I will be playing it on my PC with the TV on mute before each game next season.

I think they should get someone to write a new song just for them. It'll probably save them a few thousand a year at least.
