Why can't we vote against lesser evils and not a third party?

Can you please go to the following site and then explain to me how voting the big government oriented status quo (which McCain and Obama clearly both are) is going to change anything for the better?

    I think it's because we, as a people, are afraid that the other party will win. We tend to see the elections as a Democrat vs Republican thing and any vote for an Independent is wasted.

    I voted for Ralph Nader the last time and my brother (die hard Democrat) told me that people like me are the reason George Bush got elected.

    I usually vote for little parties. But I think that, regarding the coming US elections, there can be a major change in US foreign policies, please God. After all, Obama stated that he is prepared to talk with and listen to everyone. So I know it doesn't mean a lot, but it is still something.
