Problem with hosted Exchange?
We are running Windows 2000 Pro workstations and a Windows Server 2003 file server.
My bosses opted for a hosted Exchange solution rather than an in-house Exchange server. We signed up with a company who have us connecting through a VPN. The VPN connects and stays connected, but Outlook 2003 will either not connect to their Exchange server or it will connect for a while and then disconnect.
I was on with several of their tech support agent all day yesterday with no resolution. They say something on our domain (network) is blocking the OUtlook connection. But, the IT guy we use for the stuff that's over my head says it is domain independant.
Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

My question would be "why are you using a VPN?". Exchange 2003/2007 supports RPC over HTTPS (now called Outlook Anywhere) that uses an SSL-encrypted connection over port 443 to communicate between Outlook and Exchange over the internet. The entire purpose of this technology is to eliminate the need for maintaining VPN connections, which frankly can be sensitive to little network problems. I'm an IT consultant, and our entire company connects this way since we're all out in the field at all times.
As for doing this with a single vendor...good luck. Most small business consultants don't do hosting. My suggestion is to either get the current company to do Outlook Anywhere or find someone who will.

The problem is in a multi-sourced solution, so each one blames the other one and you get nothing.
Tell your boss that the situation will remain this way until you have one person doing the whole thing - then he can only blame himself, and he'd have to fix it. (I'd have your consultant do it his way, since he's going to have to support it.)
