  • How can you determine who is connected to a share?

How can you determine which networked computer is attached to a certain share on a file server? Our backup hard drive (N:) always shows active connections (usually 1 or 2) in MMC>Computer management>System Tools>Shared Folders>Shares even though there are no active backups. It will not let me safely eject the drive to change it with these active connections.

I have had to end the share in order to get rid of those connections in order to safely eject the drive each day. How can I determine which computer is connected to that share?

  • OK to put potted Christmas tree outside?

We live in Pennsylvania. We got a 3 - 3 1/2 foot tall potted Christmas tree this year because I wanted to plant it in the back yard in the spring. When it was undecorated on New Year's Day, I took it down to the basement where it is cool (40-50 degrees). The place where I got it said not take take it directly outside, but to put it somewhere cool and then transition it outside. I have been watering it, but there is not a lot of natural light down there...just two small windows.

As I said, it has been in the cool basement for coming up on a month now. Is it OK to move it outside now? We are in a cold spell now, so it is below freezing and expected to remain so for the next week or so. I'm just worried about it not getting enough light. It does look healthy.

  • Chicago politics dirty to the top?

"Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested on Tuesday on charges he brazenly conspired to sell or trade the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by President-elect Barack Obama to the highest bidder in what a federal prosecutor called a "corruption crime spree."

What do you say now? By the way, Governor, your hairstyle went out in the 80's...or is it a piece?

  • How is Obama's Grandmother?

She was so sick and he left the campaign trail to be with her on her "deathbed". Now he's back and I haven't heard boo about her? Coincidently, I heard that the liberal Republican Governor of Hawaii sealed his birth records? Why shouldn't we be suspicious of that?

  • Wireless Access Points?

I work for a law firm and set up a Wireless Access Point (Linksys WAP54G) in our office so our laptop and several of the partners' laptops they bring in from home can connect to our network wirelessly.

Now, my boss wants vendors and other attorneys who visit our office to be able to access the interent wirelessly if they need to. Is that possible without setting up their computers to log onto our network domain? I ask because I brought my laptop in from home, which has never logged onto our domain. I did have the WAP set up in WEP security mode using a passphrase generated key PLUS MAC address filtering. I removed the MAC address filtering and tried to connect my laptop using one several of the generated keys. It seemed to work, but I got no signal indicator and Internet Explorer would not connect. I also tried using no security mode (open wireless network) and it still didn't work.

I'm guessing that you cannot do what they want to do using a WAP. In that case, would I be better off using a run of the mill wireless router like I have at home and connecting it directly to the cable modem?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Problem with remote controlled Harbor Breeze ceiling fan?

Has anyone else had a similar problem with Harbor Breeze brand ceiling fans with a remote?

We bought a 52 in. Triton ceiling fan at Lowes (model #192900). It is a fan/light kit combination with a remote control for the light and fan controls. Unless my house is haunted, the remote is activating itself and turning on the fan.

After our contractor installed it, it happened several times. The fan/light is in the master bedroom and is hard wired leaving the remote as the only way to turn it on or off. We would walk in and the fan would be on high when we know it was off. Other times, we would have it on low during the night and wake up in the middle of the night to it twirling on high. In these cases, I would simly grab the remote and turn it either to off or low.

We recently got back from vacation and I went into the bedroom to find the fan running on high. Also, the little light behind the Harbor Breeze emblem on the remote was lit. It SHOULD light up when you press a button on the remote and then fade out after a period of time. But, the light was on constantly. I had to press almost all of the buttons in order to get it to turn off and then yank the (new) battery. Last night, the remote actually lit up and the fan turned on while I was watching it.

I'm going to contact Lowes today and see about getting a new remote. Now, I know our contractor didn't change the channel (frequency) of the transmitter and receivier from the default. I was thinking that someone nearby could have a similar fan on the same frequency, but that would not cause the remote to light up. I think the remote is defective.

Has anyone else had asimilar issue with a similar Harbor Breeze remote control unit?

  • Vehicle Pet Barrier (Partition) Question?

I am looking into a vehicle pet barrier (partition) for one of our vehicles. We are taking our two dogs on vacation with us to the shore and I want something to keep them in the back seat and not distract me while I'm driving.

The vehicle is a Dodge Stratus and the model I'm looking at is made by Pet Trex. It is a tubular steel design and has a center section so they can't through near the armrest hole. Has anybody had experience with this model or can recommend another good one that isn't super expensive. Thanks!

  • Are the attacks on Palin a sign that the Dems are running scared?

I mean...a woman on one of the tickets and it's NOT Hill-Rod. And Obama gets only a minor bump after the convention? WHat would they have done if she had no faults? They'd be crushed!

  • New twist on Nigerian scams?

I received an email this morning at work. It is from a "Jack Brown" and was sent from an @ig.com.br email address.

Subject: SOMEONE YOU CALL YOUR FRIEND, WANTS YOU DEAD.

Body: In essence, it says that he has been hired by someone to kill me within 10 days. However, if I pay him $8,000, he will not kill me. It goes on to say that his "boys" are watching me and are ready to strike.

LOL! I know this is illegal, but the chances are it's not someone from the U.S., so why bother reporting it? Has anyone else received the same email?

I didn't even realize that I was important enough to have someone be paid to kill me! However, I admit that I am a little insulted that I'm only worth $8,000!

  • Problem with hosted Exchange?

We are running Windows 2000 Pro workstations and a Windows Server 2003 file server.

My bosses opted for a hosted Exchange solution rather than an in-house Exchange server. We signed up with a company who have us connecting through a VPN. The VPN connects and stays connected, but Outlook 2003 will either not connect to their Exchange server or it will connect for a while and then disconnect.

I was on with several of their tech support agent all day yesterday with no resolution. They say something on our domain (network) is blocking the OUtlook connection. But, the IT guy we use for the stuff that's over my head says it is domain independant.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

  • Sedation for nail trimming?

Does anyone have to sedate their dog to trim its nails? My german shepherd (in my avatar) will NOT let us trim his nails.

We got him at 2 years old from a family who did not pay much attention to him. From what I saw and gathered, they had like 5 kids and he was either outside in the yard or in his kennel. He was also only taken to the vet once in his two years prior to us obtaining him.

Our vet gave us two Acepromazine Maleate tablets a few months ago, but I have been reluctant to use them, but we HAVE to trim his nails. I am going to do so tonight. Should I give him both (not sure of the mg)? The vet said give him one or both. He's 80+ lbs. I'm thinking both.

  • No frills cell phones?

Do any of the major manufacturers make a cell phone that is just a phone anymore??? I am due to renew with ATT Wireless (or change to another carrier) on the 11th. I want phones for me and my wife that aren't a camera phone, text messaging, music downloading, coffee making phones. I can understand people wanting all of those things, but what about those of us who don't?

I know the plans like Go Phone and Jitterbug may fit the bill, but I want to stick with a major carrier.

  • Quality lawn tractor for $1200 or less?

I have been looking to buy a lawn tractor since we just bought a house with a little over a half acre of grass. I have mowed it once with a push mower and won't do that again.

Can anyone recommend a quality lawn tractor for $1200 or less? I do not need a zero turn or anything fancy like that.

I was looking at the Troy-Bilt Pony 17 HP, 42 inch cut. However, it looks to me to be the exact same mower as the Bolens and the Yard Machines...all made by MTD. I found a website which pretty much rated them as junk.

I was considering a Craftsman from Sears, but all but the more expensive ones have a manual transmission (stop to change speed).

I have considered used, but am not thrilled about going that route when I can buy new for not much more.

  • What to do with ArboyDay.org trees until planted?

I ordered some trees from the Arbor Day foundation. They will arrive today, but I may not get to plant them until this weekend. What is the best way to keep them alive until then?

BTW: they are bare root (not potted) 6-12" tree starters.
