Is this story of a hit and run further evidence of the positive effects of a secular influence on society?
HARTFORD, Conn. — A 78-year-old man is tossed like a rag doll by a hit-and-run driver and lies motionless on a busy city street as car after car goes by. Pedestrians gawk but appear to do nothing. One driver stops briefly but then pulls back into traffic. A man on a scooter slowly circles the victim before zipping away.

Were people to busy to help or did they believe it should be the government's job to help the man?
You're right it did happen in old times- people like Samaratin(sp?) were treated like pariahs and suffered because of their caste.
Was it the same for Mr. Torres?
I guess because Fox reported it- it didn't happen. Mr. Torres is at home fine- boy, some folks really are existentialists.
SOMEONE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED- right then not drove around him- I hopefully know no one that could justify driving by and not stopping.
Thanks for all the great answers- I thought I was the only one shocked by this.

Well it looked terrible, but secular society has not much to do with it in my opinion. Religion doesn't automatically equate to benevolence. White Christians in Mississippi in the 50s probably wouldn't have lifted a finger to help a black man in the street. In Chicago, Watts, St Lewis, and other areas in the US today black Christians probably wouldn't lift a finger to help a white guy in the street today.
In the middle east there is a huge focus on religion, but you see hurt and dead people on the city streets and the best they get before the family gets to them is a rock on their head if they are dead so others don't have to look at their faces. They can be there for days. I have seen it personally.
In a metro environment people become more in tune with communication than substance. It's all about how other perceive you because you have to work and live with a lot of people, so following the group, fitting in, saying the right things are all important. When it comes down to reality as in actually doing what you say you would do, there is a disconnect. This is why charity is a huge thing in metro populations, they talk about it, say they do it, say everyone should give to charity ... but in metro areas charity is much lower than less populated areas even though in metro areas the income levels are substantially higher. They talk it up, even talk about giving this or that to charity, but they don't actually do it much like they don't actually put themselves out to help someone they don't know.
I am pretty sure, as I have done much independent study on this, that it's more a symptom of metro or population centric communities that don't have as much personal contact with the practicalities of every day life (because they tend to do a narrow specialty and hire others or buy others products to fill most of their needs), that a disconnect develops between a person (group of those people) and real life, because real life to them is the communication, not the acts because they don't have much they have to concentrate on outside of their own narrow specialized method of making a living. Case in point, to people in this situation an education is a diploma, not what was learned to get it and they are immune to the fact that to get a diploma you just learn the information presented, which is only a small fraction of what is out there, which becomes unimportant to those seeing the piece of paper as the evidence of an all encompassing "education" ... Specialized and unaware of that outside their narrow focus similar to that occurrence in ants on an ant hill, or bees in a hive ... or what I like to example most on this, animals in an enclosed environment and how they are limited mentally.
In fact most of those people affected won't have a basis to even understand what I am talking about, which is a symptom of what I am talking about.
It's much less about religion, and much more about the social phenomena I've labeled as metropolitis.

To me this is a very sad commentary on how selfish our society has become. Whether that is due to people seperating themselves from religion or our society just becoming more self centered I don't know for sure. But maybe we are becoming more self-centered because we are straying more from organized religion. Were from a young age you (or at least in my church) were taught to atleast try to help others - do onto others are you would want done to you. We were taught to put other's needs first above our own.
The people who say it was too dangerous for others to go into the street the guy was not hit again while lying on the street so I think it is safe to say other motorists were avoiding him at that point and would have avoided anyone helping him. Also if you are going to walk up to the guy (which someone did and then walked back to the sidewalk) you obviously are not that afraid of the traffic.
More and more people expect someone else to help...well what happens in society when we all start thinking that way. I do believe that people can care for their fellowman and have no belief in organized religion but somewhere they have some sort of belief system and belief in a higher power.
There may have been little someone could have done medically but also just sit with the guy and make sure no one else hits him.
On one other note - it was interesting to read the comments of bystanders who did nothing chastising others for doing nothing or being offended that others did nothing.

In a psychology class that I had there was a portion in the text book that talked about how the bigger the crowd the less likely someone will be to help an injured person. There are news articles of people getting beaten in large crowds and no one doing anything about it. I do not remember any of the terminology but this is the case with large crowds. Even if you ask people if they would help if they saw someone in that situation, everyone would say yes, psychology says otherwise when you are actually in such a situation.
I was at a party once where a young kid fell into the pool. For about 20 seconds everyone stared and did nothing until one of the older guys jumped in (suit and all) to get the kid. It was like we were all frozen expecting the other to jump in and help.
As far as the Government helping? Ok, maybe so if someone called 911. You don't want to touch someone if they're in a situation like that as you might make their condition worse (broken bones, etc...). But at least sit there till 911 arrives. I've called 911 when I've seen an accident but when I saw 4-5 people get out of their cars to help I drove on.
Hopefully articles like this will wake us up as a society because that really pains me to see what happened to that guy.

From the very story you linked to:
<"We have no regard for each other," said Chief Daryl Roberts, who on Wednesday released the video in hopes of making an arrest in the accident that left Angel Arce Torres in critical condition.
However, Roberts and other city officials backtracked on Thursday. After initially saying he was unsure whether anyone called 911, he and other city officials appeared at a news conference in which they said that four people dialed 911 within a minute of the accident, and that Torres received medical attention shortly after that.>
Next time, perhaps you should read the whole story before drawing premature conclusions.
That being said, I remain troubled by the apparent lack of willingness to simply stop and help. However, the fact that the victim was in the road (where a 'rescuer' could be hit) and moving him out of the road could cause more injury; together with the likelihood that anyone without at least basic medical training would be unable to do anything to really help as well as the ease and effectiveness of the 911 system all tend to mitigate my concern.
I would like to think that I would have stopped and at least tried to prevent the injured man from being hit again until medical help arrived.

That was HORRIBLE.. i cant believe it .. everyone stood around pointing and looking.. cars as well just drive by.... to the people who were there... " you discust me.."pedestrians- you all have cell phones.. f ing use them for a good reason. Drivers- when learning to drive you learn to watch the roads for anything that could possibly jump out infront of you .. instead of talking on the phone.. pay attention to the road." It is so horrible that the people in the world are getting stupid and more completely uncoherant.. we have been on this plant for a few years now.. i think we should really start to grow and realize that if we dont do something soon.. this whole place could be gone as a result of our own stupidity

Each and every car that passed that man should be contacted by police and charged with negligence or something similar. Local papers should run their tags, get their names, and publish them in the news. I know the reporter said that they couldn't get the license plates off the video, but that's a crock. They can enhance the video and get the tag number if there were indeed tags on the back
I'm shocked. This is horrible.

It is a phenomenon that is studied in psychology. Because there were many people there, each person figured then next guy would help. If one person had decided to help, many more would have joined him in helping. If there had been only one person or maybe a couple of people present, they would have been more likely to help the person.
We get our behavioral clues from our environment. When we are in a crowd, even though we may feel that we need to exhibit some type of behavior (for instance running for the bus) if we see other people who are in our same situation and not exhibiting that behavior, then we won't.

As a committed Christian, i could say: a million. No, because of the fact the life or non-life of God won't be able to be scientifically shown. on the different hand, the procedures of evolution may well be scientifically shown. 2&3. human beings in a park can sing or pray or do regardless of they choose for, see you later as they do no longer disturb others and the form isn't subsidized by employing the government. 4. squaddies might desire to be counseled that they are loose to coach any faith they choose for, or to no longer practice any faith, and are forbidden from treating any member of the militia in a distinctive way might desire to they have a distinctive faith or no faith in any respect. 5. No, inspite of the undeniable fact that i think of that politicians calling for prayer as a answer for problems confuses and demeans the meaning of the two prayer and politics. 6. i will make a competent argument for removing them from militia bases and allow squaddies to attend regardless of amenities they want off base, or none in any respect. Prisoners, in spite of the undeniable fact that, have not got that luxury. 7. i think of that the two government and church buildings could be extra suitable off if government grew to become into no longer subsidizing church buildings with the aid of tax advantages. yet, see you later as any apolitical nonprofit group gets tax advantages, then all such communities might desire to get advantages. in spite of the undeniable fact that, tax advantages might desire to be withdrawn from any enterprise which helps or opposes political subject concerns. 8. i do no longer choose for the police or firefighters employing their effectual time suitable in prayer--they have genuine jobs to do. 9. because of the fact there's no medical consensus on the advantages or injury of circumcision, that feels like somebody subject devoid of connection with faith. 10. I truthfully does not choose for the style of information to take delivery of to a new child devoid of parental approval. because of the fact i've got self assurance that that's fake doctrine, i could wish that no-one ever informed a new child that.

I kinda think this happened back in Jesus time. Wasn't that a parable, a common event with a meaning? Soemthing about a Samaratin. Wasn't it a Rabbi and others who walked by? So ... Maybe this is not so new ... or secular.

That is a secular society at its best! Ask Russia! That is where the democrats will lead this country. Soon it will be as if a cat gets hit in the road. They will drive right by you, and curse you, because you got in there way!
