Which classic car should I buy?

Which classic (well, pre-1990 anyway) car should I buy?

It needs to be attractive, a little bit cult-ish, cost ten grand or less and be relatively reliable and easy to care for. I quite like Alfa Romeos, Lancias, old Audis, that sort of thing.

The Triumph TR series is usually a good bet. The TR-6 is a goo d car for the money. Get one with an overdrive if you can. Definitely get a buyer's inspection by an independent mechanic though on any used classic. Don't buy a TR-7. Either a TR-6 or TR-4 depending on your taste. They are expensive to maintain for some things but generally very reliable. You want to have the inspecting mechanic check the carbs, the transmission and compression. If those are in good shape then you'll have a fun car with less maintenance than most classics.

On alfa's avoid the Spica Fuel Injection if possible, they are expensive to fix and few mechanics know how to tune these properly.

Lancia's are entirely too expensive to fix and parts are scarce in the US.

Fiat's on the other hand have great parts supply at low prices but getting a spyder without rust is difficult. They handle poorly in the rain.

If you can find one for a decent price, the Jensen Interceptor is a great car. Not sure about the maintenance or parts supply.

Another great car is the old BMW 3.0cs - two door are going for 5-8k depending on condition.

The best American muscle cars were built in 1969. The GTO Judge, the Hemi GTX or Road Runner. The 69 Pontiac Firebird and Camaros were a 1 year body, the best. body design that was only that year and probably the most valuable Firebird or Camaro especially if it was the Z/28 Camaro or the 69 bodied Trans Am. If I were a serious muscle car buyer, I would only be looking at the 1969 model cars. No emission controls and all out horsepower..The nicest body styles too. Anything after 1972 is no real American muscle car. Sorry but a 79 Camaro is a girly piece of junk. Stay with 1967 to 1972 cars. Those are the real muscle cars.

World's your oyster for £10k! Pick up a copy of any Classic car mag and take your pick. For that money I'd be looking at a Rover P5B Coupe, Citroen DS, Alfa Duetto Spyder, VW Type 1 Karmann Ghia among others. Bear in mind when buying a classic that unless your intention is to restore it yourself as part of the fun of ownership, buy the very best car you can afford, and join whichever owners club caters for whatever model you're interested in.

ps, if you're looking for an Audi Quattro, I'd wait till the prices come back down to earth, A-2-A has added thousands to Quattro values!

1980's Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. They are very easy to work on and can fit a lot of different engines. Parts are extremely easy to find and they are actually pretty good on gas (20-24). They are tough in accidents (if you ever have one) and they are VERY reliable. They can go for anywhere between $1000-$15000. They look awesome with the 2 door body style. Good luck.

Monte Carlos, Caprices, Gran Prix's, and Buick Regals around the same year are very similar the Cutlass also.

Source(s): My cousin owned one and I'm looking for one.

Can`t go wrong with a Morris Minor, easy to maintain, can buy quite cheaply or pay more and get a good one. e-Bay usually has a good choice. Have a look see if you`re interested.

BMW older 6 series are a good car, make an interesting statement, reliable as any other BMW and are in your price range.

I owned a '77 Porsche 911 about 9 years ago. Should be around your price range, lots of fun to drive.

You should get a volkswagen karmann ghia, i may have spelt that wrong. Watch the film zodiac, some couple who get tied up and bummed or something near the beginning have one in white. You can get them for 4-6 grand in real nice condition
