You won't be locked up against your will, if that's what you're worried about. You will just be monitored closely by your parents and therapist. If you don't want to be locked up let your therapist know.

It is not a crime to feel suicidal or to think about it. Attempting to receive treatment will not get you committed or sent to the "nut hut".

It takes quite a lot to get one committed, even under extreme circumstances. There are court proceeding and so forth involved.

In an emergency, one can be placed on a 72 hour hold. This can be voluntary or mandatory depending on the circumstances involved.

The 72 hour hold comes into play when one is in a mental health crisis and suicide plans have been explicitly expressed or demonstrated. This would indicate ones plans are immediate, and that one is planning to harm oneself or others.

Depending on the nature of the crisis, the violence level, and bed availability, the 72 hour hold could take place at a hospital emergency room or hospital mental ward.

If there is no room at the hospital then the hold could be at your local county mental health emergency mental ward and crisis center.

If the crisis and behavior is violent or has criminal elements -- then the hold could possibly be at a jail.

actually despite what these people are saying, you CAN be "locked up" or committed involuntarily to a mental health inpatient clinic if you make threats of suicide. It's called 51/50, and it is where you appear to be a danger to self or others, and that includes verbal threats.

Now, it does depend on the context---your age for one matters, bc minors are more liekly to be involuntarily committed than adults, and also how you presented your feelings of being suicidal. If you were appearing to be impulsive, unclear, and displaying signs of extreme psychological stress, such as shaking, nervousness, twitching, and not being rational, then you could be involuntarily committed. However, if your tone was rational and calm, and you were simply just expressing feelings of depression and thoughts of suicide without a direct plan, then you mgiht not be committed.

But I once told a social worker I felt suicidal when i was 17 and she put me into a mental health ward for 2 weeks agaisnt my will.

You need help if you're feeling that way. I work with clients in the mental health system and whenever someone mentions suicide we have to report it. Talking about your feelings of suicide is your first step to getting well. It's an outreach. You should open up to your counselor and get the help you need.

well I dont think that the therapist should have the right to lock you up, because you are telling him your feelings, and he shouldnt go telling how you feel because it is confidential. They don't lock you up, but there is a chance he will tell your parents, and he will most likely monitor you carefully. If you are worried about it you could probably confront him. best of luck with whatever you decide to do.. :D

Yes, and they will! You will be brought to a hospital and evaluated. If they deem it necessary they will commit you.
