when i wanted to see the top speed of my harley (speedo only goes to 120mph) so i put my tomtom in a plastic ziplock bag and duct taped it to may bars (crude i know, but it worked)
a normal car gps is half the price of a waterproof bike kit, so get creative

GPS for bikes are expensive due to needing to be waterproof.
Car systems don't so are cheaper.
We use a car/pedestrian unit that is removable from the mounting cradle that fits it to the car.
We slip it into a see through waterproof camera pouch and sit it in the top of the tank bag where we can see the screen.
We don't have access to the audible instructions this way but can see the visual directions.
Fortunately it's easy to pull over on a bike and check what you're doing.
I think it's possible to get such units with bluetooth, then you could have a bluetooth receiver in your helmet and get the audible instructions that way.
No idea of the cost though, might be cheaper than a dedicated bike unit or it might not.
Our car unit was cheap so we are happy with it's limitations on the bike.....it does what we need it to do.
Either way we only ever buy Garmin.....we have three in total, one car mounted....the one I've described that is removable and a mountaineering unit.
We've always found Garmin map bases to be the most reliable.....the stories you read about people driving off cliffs following a sat nav are worth bearing in mind.
When you climb, your GPS needs to know where you are.

The Garmin Zumo 450 is for motorcycles and is waterproof. They will take the vibration of the cycles. They are a little pricey but well worth it.

You have to get special motorcycle GPS. Many car navigation system are NOT water proof.
other than that, it is matter of taste.
Good Luck...
