Are there more Christians or Atheists in prison?
I've heard Atheists argue that the proportion of Christian to Atheist inmates suggest that being a Christian does not guarantee a Christian lifestyle, etc. Does anyone have a source for this? If so, do you also have a source that would say how many of these "Christians" "converted" while in prison? It would seem that many would say they converted to Christianity in an effort to get out of jail sooner. Cheers.

In Florida Christians get a get-out-of-jail-free card, thanks to Jeb Bush. So every criminal in Florida is a Christian.

If people are converting to christianity in an effort to get out of prison sooner, it will probably not work. If they are converting to christianity because they know they have been screwing up theirs and the lives of their loved ones and they want to change, well that is really good.
Prisoners need to serve their time and follow the rules. Do you think all the muslim conversions going on in prisons these days will earn prisoners any lesser time?
Prisons tend to be a pretty good recruiting place for homegrown terrorists.

Do a Google on it. There are real statistics to show that only about 0.2 % of prison inmates are atheists. I am not sure how you would interpret that result.
For example in the past when I was asked what my religion was I would reply protestant, meaning that was how I was brought up. But in reality I am an atheist.

For one thing, does converting in prison reduce your jail time? Because then I would expect a 100% conversion rate.
Additionally, most Christians tend to call other Christians who perform deeds they do not agree with "not true Christians". Which sound suspiciously like the "No True Scotsman" fallacy. Look it up sometime.
Source(s): Whatever the case, outspoken atheists are an extreme minority, so I would expect that to hold true in prisons as well. - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

You need to compare the percentages out of each group that are in prison, not just raw numbers. Also, you are correct that many inmates adopt a religion while in jail, which skews the results. I don't think the majority of those who become religious are trying to hasten their own parole, however. I think it's mostly due to the anguish they feel from wasting their life away in a cell.

As there are probably 5 times more Christians than there are atheists in the world, it stands to reason that more who PROCLAIM to be Christians are in prison.
At the same time, there are also more Christians who are physicians, nurses, etc. than there are atheists.
You are right. Many people in prison SAY they are Christians and have "found God"----- until they get out, get in trouble, come back to prison, and "find" Him again.

People of Faith believe their morality comes from outside themselves and so does temptation. If they're good it's for God. If they're bad it's because the devil made them do it.
Atheists morality comes from within and anything they do is they're own choice good or bad.
At a guess I'd say there are more people in prison who are religious. If not going in than once inside in order to blame it on someone else.

Though I have not been to prison I can tell you from my experience there are far far more Christians in jail than Atheists.

The vast majority of americans are raised in Christian households, so you will have a majority of "Christians" in jail no matter what.

Here: I really don't know how accurate this is but all I did was type it in search.

BTW: You seem to think that Atheists are a group when the only association we all have and agree on is the non belief in deities.
