Dog question?
I just got a Lab puppy (he's 12 weeks old). He's great and full of energy but everytime I take him for a walk or to play all he does is get obssesed with trying to eat the woodchips that are scattered around the park or our backyard. Is he trying to purge himself. I don't get it and it's a hassle to keep shooing him away from the woodchips and snatching them out of his jaws.

At that age, puppies tend to want to eat everything on the ground.... I don't think he's trying to purge himself.
You can try sprinkling some cayenne pepper in a certain area of your backyard, on the woodchips... then take him out there on a leash and let him pick one up. Sabotage.... this worked for my puppy when he was chewing stones from the driveway. If you give the pup a bad experience with woodchips at home, he'll be less inclined to pick them up at the park, or wherever.
Good luck :D

My lab did this for a while. Never figured out why, but I think it was just something new and she wanted a taste. I started carrying a pocket full of treats to distract her with, and it worked fairly well. Eventually she outgrew the wood chip fetish entirely

He could be teething carry something with you a treat or chew toy that is safe and divert his attention when he goes for the wood chips. Usually when they have up set tummies they go for certain grasses not wood.

Puppies don't have hands, so they learn by using their mouths. It's nothing to worry about, unless they are chewing stuff that has been treated with chemicals.

that is very normal! It's your job to teach him. If it's a hassel, why did you get a puppy so young??? I have a 5 month old puppy who LOVES to eat mulch! and everything else on the ground. YOU have to teach him what he can eat and what he needs to leave. Puppies are curious about EVERYTHING. It's new to them. So if you think it's a hassel, you should've NEVER gotten a puppy.

Take one of his favorite toys with you when you walk him. Use that to distract him from it. And Labs love to fetch and retrieve. They can't turn that down.

It could be he is needing a vitamin or mineral or it could be he is wormy. It could be he just wants something to chew on. It won't hurt him let him chew.

Puppies are like babies, they like to put things in their mouths and chew. He will outgrow it.
