Is it okay to apply lipstick at the table after dinner?

This makes me uncomfortable and feels unappropriate, especially in better restaurants. Your thoughts?

No, it isn't. Applying lipstick falls under the category of "personal grooming" and should be done in private.

In my opinion it is no different than clipping one's nails or brushing one's teeth.

I'm not aware of exact cultural rules on this but the safest answer would be no.

Just excuse yourself to the restroom after dinner, Wash your hands and apply lipstick there.

Most restrooms (especially in nice restaurants) have a counter and chair in front of a mirror for that exact purpose.

That way you can apply your makeup in the light with a big mirror and your don't have to feel embarrassed.

    Hope I could help.

Yeah it's not really "ok" to do. It seems rude to the people at your table, also to the people sitting around you. It's like "fixing your hair" at your table or cleaning your teeth!! :)

There's just some things you need to save for the restroom or once you're inside the car, in your own private space :)

LOL I don't really know but I do it all the time..its better than walking around in a nice restaraunt with half your lipstick off. I mean people do it, I do it, quite frankly I dont give a **** what people think about it. I'm just taking care of how I look, no harm in that. It's just lipstick!!

The whole point of make up is to make you look better and to 'fool' people. Putting it on infrount of people takes away that and makes it very obvious that you are wearing make up. I would just do it n the BR because then I wouldn't look as if I only cared about my looks.

it depends on who is doing it and what kind of place it is.

I'd just as soon not see grandma smear some bright red stuff well past the edge of her lips, but if an attractive woman makes a discrete adjustment to the shade of her lips, I think the dining experience has been enhanced.

when in doubt, go to the powder room ladies

  • No you should excuse yourself to the restroom, then apply the lipstick. Its just rude and inappropriate

I don't think that its that big of a deal. But if your uncomfortable with it just go to the restroom real quick and put it on.

I wouldn't for 2 reasons. 1 it's tacky and 2 you may smear it and not even know. Best to do this in the restroom in front of a mirror.

    It's appropriate. And it's sexy.

It's not like blowing your nose at the table - TOTALLY inappropriate! Or plucking your eyebrows, or applying make-up.

There is nothing wrong with a brief touch-up after eating, while holding a small compact mirror. It's part of being a woman. We're not manniquins, you know!

Wow, reading some of these responses makes me wonder about the "uptight scale" of this country.

If you see a woman re-touching her lipstick beside you at the restaurant, IT WILL BE ME.
