It sucked. A LOT of people died.
Seriously though the people believed that if you had too much of one fluid in your body (i.e. black bile, yellow bile, blood, or mucous) that you couldn't be whole or balanced unless some of it was drained. It had to do with personality. People with excess blood were believed to be "sanguine" which means that they were very artistic, but melancholy and easily depressed. And because of this superstition, people died.
