Why do we continue to make an issue of somone's personal religious beliefs in a secular society?
The Constitution says:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press".
Yet we continue to make someone's personal beliefs, the manner of their worhsip, or if they worship at all is somehow relevant.
The First Amendment categorically states that one's religion, or lack thereof, is a personal issue and is not really relevant to politics or one's suitability for public office, any more than it is for any other form of employment.
Yet it is always the first thing to be exploited as a poltical issue; more often used as a weapon to distract others from the real issues in a poltical campaign.
So, pinplz, since you believe we are not a secular society while the Constitution quite clearly establishes a secular society, you must feel that we are once again straying from what the Constution intends this society to be.
Correct?
To the rest, please support your opinions with some logical arguments, not just rants. Thanks..
darowdom: My point is, why is Obama's personal beliefs relevant if we have the freedom of religion as well as speech and opinion? Obama, after all, is not running for Pope, but President.
There is a difference.

I think American people have the right to question every little thing about a person who is trying to become the leader of our country. I just wish we were informed of Obama's practicing religious background before millions of voters had already cast their vote, then we wouldn't be stuck with him.

Because, unfortunately, America is not secular. I personally do not put an ounce of thought into a candidate's religion unless it degrades morality. The morality I speak of has nothing to do with religion but rather what society (in the broad sense) dictates.

Because a lot of religious people were trained to think:
"people who think like us are good people, people who don't think like us are bad people."
A lot of voters react on a gut level to this stuff.
