Sure I used to vacuum my dogs with a special hose attachment. They loved it.
We also blow dry our dogs with a large loud cattle blowdryer. They don't care. They've been dried like this since they were 4 weeks old.

Yes - this is a good demonstration of what can happen when puppies are not raised correctly, and taken from their litters too young.
If the puppies are exposed indirectly (from nearby, but not right next to them) to noises such as vacuum cleaners when they are babies, they learn it is just a part of life.
Some herding breeds and terriers still go wild around the vac, but it seems to have as much to do with the way it moves around than the appliance itself. Also, remember that their hearing is far better than ours, and some vacs can be whining in very high registers we cannot hear - and that can be painful.

Our current dog doesn't like it much (or the fan heater!), but we used to have a dog that LOVED the vacuum, and being vacuum cleaned! When he saw us going into the 'vacuum cubboard' he would lie on his back waiting, and wouldn't move until he was actually cleaned! I have no idea where this came from, I guess it used to be a game when he was little, and he just was never scared of it

Yes, I've got one that's not and one that is. I've had the one that's not afraid since a pup and just never acknowledged his concerns about the vacuum so him seeing there was nothing to be afraid of by me did not reinforce any fears he may have developed had I doted over him and said "oh, it's ok". The one that is afraid is a rescue dog who is afraid of everything. We still just tell her it's ok, but go on with vacuuming so she knows it's nothing to be afraid of. HOWEVER, I do have a Bull Dog that comes to my doggie daycare that wants to attack it no matter what I do. We just laugh and continue vacuuming and he eventually just walks beside it as if he's protecting me from the big bad noise machine.

I don't think dogs are afraid of the vacuum cleaner. I think they're just confused by it. If you spend time getting them used to it, and don't torment them with it by chasing them around the house, the dog will be fine.
of course. the loud noise can be scary. But a well trained dog should be able to handle such a situation.

Yes. My older two just ignore me when I vacuum.
The little one still goes a little cuckoo when we break out the vacuum cleaner. Or the duster for the fans. Or the broom/mop. Or the hair dryer. Ah, I love my Jackson. =]

I have heard of dogs who will actually attack vacuum cleaners- Mostly small but aggressive ones like chihuahuas, or chihuahua-crosses.

My two don't fear it at all .... I can vacuum right next to them and they don't even move, unless I tell them to.
